Washington Wild Things News Release
ROCKFORD, IL-After Saturday evening's rainout forced a Sunday doubleheader, the Wild Things and Aviators split the twinbill with Washington edging Rockford 2-1 in game one and the Aviators taking game two by a 5-2 final.
In game one, the Wild Things came from behind in dramatic fashion to win by a score of 2-1. Pitcher Luke Wilkins improved to 4-2 with a complete game victory, while his mound counterpart Kyle Hassna was charged with the loss.
Rockford got out to an early lead on a Josh Davis RBI single to give the Aviators a 1-0 lead in the second. The Aviators threatened to extend the lead in the fourth with runners on second and third, but shutdown pitching by Wilkins prevented Rockford from reaching home.
Washington threatened to tie the game up on a single by John Fidanza, but a spot on throw to home prevented Andrew Heck from reaching the plate safely. The score remained 1-0 heading into the final inning until a solo home run from David Popkins knotted the contest at 1-1. A Scott Kalamar single to right field set up the eventual winning run, as Matt Peters was able to knock a run-scoring double to give Washington the late lead. Wilkins managed to hold Rockford in the bottom of the seventh, giving him the complete game victory.
In game two, the Aviators got the best of the Wild Things winning 5-2. Roberto Padilla received the win for the Aviators while Ernesto Zaragoza took the loss for Washington.
The Aviators got off to an early lead thanks to an RBI single by Devon Rodriquez and an error to give Rockford a 2-0 advantage in the third. The Aviators extended their lead in the fourth on an Anthony Renteria double that scored Tyler Smith and Justin Fox to make it 4-0 in favor of the Aviators. Rockford tacked another run on in the fifth off a Dusty Robinson RBI single.
The Wild Things seemed to begin a comeback in the top of the seventh when David Popkins hit his second home run of the day to cut the lead to 5-2, but the deficit was too much to overcome in the final at bat.
The Wild Things, as well as the rest of the Frontier League, will rest for the next few days during the 2015 all-star break. Washington will return home to CONSOL Energy Park on Friday, July 17 to host the Normal CornBelters for a three-game series. First pitch to start the second half of the 2015 season is set for 7:05 p.m. For tickets, please visit the Wild Things box office, call 724-250-9555 or visit washingtonwildthings.com.
