Miners Win Big Against Slammers in Rubber Match

Joliet, IL- The Southern Illinois Miners (32-19) record 18 hits in a 15-4 win over the Joliet Slammers (22-29) on Sunday.

The Miners scored a pair in the first inning off former Southern Illinois pitcher Michael Carden. CF Aaron gates led off with a single. RF Michael Early doubled up the third base line to put two in scoring position. SS Niko Vasquez walked to load the bases and 2B Frank Martinez walked, allowing a run to score. 1B Joe Rapp brought in Early with a sacrifice fly to make the score 2-0 Miners before Carden escaped the inning.

The Slammers pushed across a run in the second before the Miners broke the game open in the fifth inning, scoring seven runs on seven hits and running Carden from the game. They scored three times in the seventh on two-run homer by Early and a solo shot by Vasquez against pitcher Tyler Murphy. They added three more runs in the eighth against pitcher Aaron Vaughn.

Down 13-1 entering the eighth, the Slammers put a run on the board. LF Phil Bates and DH Hunter Ridge reached on back-to-back hits, and 2B Sam Klein knocked in Bates. Joliet scored twice more in the ninth on an 1B Adam Giacalone double, scoring Charlie White. Bates knocked in Giacalone to make in 15-4, which would ultimately be the final score. Carden (2-2) took the loss in his first poor outing of the season. The Slammers have four days off for the all-star break before traveling to Evansville to take on the Otters over the weekend.
