Stockton Ports News Release
LANCASTER, Calif. - Thursday night's game at The Hangar will be one that the Stockton Ports will remember, but prefer to forget. The Lancaster JetHawks scored 29 runs, including 18 of the final 19 in the game, to beat Stockton 29-11 and take the rubber match of their three-game series.
Stockton jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first highlighted by a two-run single by Seth Brown. After Ports starter Brett Graves (3-4) worked a scoreless first inning, he allowed four runs while facing eight batters in the second. With two on and one out, Jason Martin hit a two-run single to left. After Kristian Trompiz reached on a dropped fly ball by center fielder James Harris, Bobby Boyd doubled to left to give the JetHawks a 4-3 lead.
The Ports tied the score in the top of the third on a Harris home run, which was the final run allowed by JetHawks starter Rogelio Armenteros, who received a no-decision after allowing four runs on six hits over three innings worked.
Lancaster fired back with its first massive inning of the night. With a runner at second and one out, Bryan Muniz singled to plate the first of seven runs in the frame. After Jamie Richie walked, Martin hit a three-run homer to right, the first of seven Lancaster home runs in the contest. After a triple and a hit batter, Graves was lifted for Matt Stalcup, who surrendered a two-run double to Boyd and a sac-fly to Garrett Stubbs to give Lancaster an 11-4 advantage.
Graves suffered the loss after going two-and-a-third innings and allowing 10 runs (eight earned) on seven hits while walking two and striking out one.
The Ports had their biggest inning of the night in the fourth and nearly tied the score. With Alex Winkelman making his California League debut on the mound for the JetHawks, Melvin Mercedes and Richie Martin drew back-to-back walks to start the inning. With one out, Harris lined a two-run double to left-center and Brown followed with an RBI double to make it 11-7. After the second out was recorded, Sandber Pimentel singled, Mikey White drove him in with an RBI single to right and Argenis Raga hit a two-run double to right-center to pull the Ports within a run at 11-10. Winkelman would strike out Mercedes to end the inning and strand the tying run at second base.
Lancaster's biggest inning of the night came in the bottom of the fourth. After Stalcup hit Brooks Marlow to open the inning, Muniz hit the first of two home runs to right field to run the score to 13-10. After a double, walk and bunt-single loaded the bases, Boyd drove in his fourth and fifth runs of the contest with a two-run single to right to make it 15-10. After a walk drawn by Stubbs, Ramon Laureano hit a grand slam to right, the first of two slams for the JetHawks on the night, to make it a 19-10 lead.
Stalcup went one inning and allowed nine runs on six hits while walking two and striking out two.
Koby Gauna pitched a scoreless fifth for Stockton but allowed three more runs in the sixth on back-to-back homers by Marlow and Muniz to run the JetHawks lead to 22-10. Gauna allowed three runs on five hits in two innings of work.
Rob Huber would finish the sixth and go on to get tagged for seven runs in the seventh. Stubbs led off with a home run, followed by an infield single and a walk. Following an RBI groundout by Ritchie, Martin, who went 5-for-5, knocked an RBI single to right. After back-to-back walks to load the bases, Boyd came to the plate and delivered the second JetHawks grand slam of the night to make it a 29-10 lead. Boyd went 4-for-7 with 9 RBI. Huber went an inning-and-a-third and allowed seven runs on five hits.
Melvin Mercedes, who had been Stockton's left fielder, was moved to the mound to pitch the final inning-and-a-third while Iolana Akau entered the game to play left field.
Stockton's final run of the game came on a solo homer by Pimentel in the eighth, his second home run in as many games. The homer came off of JetHawks reliever Ryan Deemes (1-0), who picked up the win after pitching the final three innings of the contest.
After dropping two of three games in Lancaster, the Ports continue their road trip on Friday night as they open a four-game series in Lake Elsinore with the Storm. Heath Fillmyer (3-3, 3.56 ERA) makes the start for Stockton, opposed by Lake Elsinore right-hander T.J. Weir (2-2, 1.88 ERA). First pitch is set for 7 p.m. PDT.
