Visalia Rawhide News Release
VISALIA, CA- The Rawhide (30-17) banged their way to a 16-0 shut-out win over San Jose (27-18) in an all-important rubber-match at Recreation Ballpark on Thursday night.
RHP Taylor Clarke (1-1, 2.74) threw five shut-out innings, running his consecutive innings without allowing a run to 11 over two starts. He allowed three hits, walking two and striking out three, while earning his first California League win.
Visalia's offense, which had been slumping at home lately, exploded for 16 runs on 17 hits in the winning effort. They plated runs in the first (1), second (8), fifth (5) and the seventh (2), homering three times along the way.
The eight-run second inning explosion was the most productive offensive inning for the Rawhide all season long.
3B Dawel Lugo had a career night, going 3-for-5 with a double and two home runs for a five RBI night. C Oscar Hernandez had his best game this season, going 2-for-2 and reaching base four times. He walked twice, picked up a two-run single and a two-run home run, his second of the year. SS Domingo Leyba drove in two in a three-hit effort along with DH Rudy Flores also driving in two with a couple of singles on the evening. 1B Marty Herum scored twice and picked up an RBI and CF Colin Bray drove in a run as well.
All nine of the Rawhide reached base in the blowout and eight of the nine reached base by way of a hit in the series winning effort pushing the Rawhide division lead to 2.0 games with Rancho Cucamonga coming to town tomorrow night, which will again match top teams from each division.
RHP Jordan Johnson (5-3, 4.07), a top-30 prospect in the Giants organization, was roughed up for seven runs (six earned) on three walks and a strikeout while not recording an out in the second inning.
The bullpen combination of RHP Nick Baker, RHP Blake Perry, RHP Jincy Solis and LHP Jared Miller each pitched a scoreless inning in relief of Clarke to complete the fourth shut-out for the Rawhide.
RHP Wei-Chieh Huang (1-0, 6.33) will pitch for the Rawhide tomorrow night in the series opener against RHP Josh Sborz (3-2, 3.42) for the Quakes. Gates open at 6:00 p.m. for the 7:00 p.m. first pitch and it's a Fun Filled Friday Fiesta with post-game Fireworks presented by Suncrest Bank.
