Austin Spurs News Release

AUSTIN (Feb. 3, 2015) - The Austin Spurs, presented by SWBC, will host back-to-back games at the Cedar Park Center to begin the month of February. The team will honor Bertha Sadler Means as part of Black History Month on Friday, Feb. 6th, and host Military Appreciation Night sponsored by GovX on Saturday, Feb. 7th. Both games begin at 7:30 p.m. against the Grand Rapids Drive.

Bertha Sadler Means is an educator and business woman who has been tirelessly advocating for social change in the Austin community since 1939. She is a founding member of St. James Episcopal Church, and led the way in the integration of many educational and public facilities, including St. Stephen's Episcopal School, University of Texas's athletic department, and Barton Springs Pool. Mrs. Means has received numerous distinctions, honors and awards for her involvement in education, civil rights, international affairs and historic preservation. The Austin Spurs are celebrating their 10th anniversary this season. Bertha Sadler Means and her family have been supporters since the team started in 2005.

During Saturday's game, Austin will wear camouflage jerseys to honor those who have served and are currently serving in the military. The game-worn jerseys will be auctioned off immediately following the game and all proceeds from the auction will benefit the American Widow Project.

"All of us at AWP, along with the military widows we serve and their families, are grateful for the Austin Spurs dedication and support of all of our military and all the fallen heroes whose legacies we carry on," said AWP Executive Director Taryn Davis. "We are very excited to be a part of the Govx and Austin Spurs Military Appreciation Night for another year."
