Erie BayHawks News Release

Erie, Pennsylvania - February 3, 2015- The Erie BayHawks and the Erie Times-News in Education (NIE) program are once again partnering to provide students attending the Erie BayHawks annual School Kids Jam game the opportunity to practice Common Core Standards through basketball-related classroom activities.

NIE - a 501 (c)(3) non-profit - has developed a variety of academic activities, using the BayHawks as the focus, that teach reading, writing and language arts. Activities will be made available to classrooms who attend the BayHawks annual School Kids Jam game, and are also enrolled as NIE member schools.

"We're excited to work with Erie Times-News in Education to teach students how they can utilize the BayHawks as a way to learn and practice common core standards," said BayHawks president Matt Bresee. "Through this partnership NIE is providing schools a fun and effective way to not just attend a field trip, but to make the educational connection in the classroom too."

Classroom activities will be taught by Christopher LaFuria, Education Coordinator for Erie Times-News in Education and Pennsylvania certified teacher, (English and language arts with all clearances).

In addition, students who are part of the joint program can also participate in an essay contest. Winning students will be recognized in the Erie Times-News and at a BayHawks game, and one student will win their school the opportunity to host the BayHawks in a school pep rally.

The BayHawks School Kids Jam game takes place on Thursday, February 5 at 11 a.m.. The annual event provides a field trip opportunity for area schools and all students attending receive a game ticket and lunch for just $6.00 per student. Teachers and chaperones attend and eat for free.
