Augusta Lynx News Release
Augusta, GA - For the first time all season long, the Augusta Lynx lost three games in regulation in a row this past week, dropping two games to South Carolina on the road and one game to Charlotte on the road. The week got off to rough start for the Lynx with their first trip this season to Charleston, South Carolina to face the Stingrays. The Lynx fell 5-1, as #19 Aaron Slattengren scored the lone goal for the Lynx. The goal was enough for Slattengren to take the ECHL goal-scoring lead. On Friday, the Lynx fell for the third time this season in Charlotte to the Checkers, this time by a 3-2 score. Lynx goaltender #30 Bobby Goepfert was outstanding in goal, stopping a season-high 42 shots, and despite goals from #17 Jeremy Schenderling and #6 Will Bodine, the Lynx could not manage a comeback in the final seconds. Saturday, the Lynx played much better this time around back in Charleston against the Stingrays, but the offense went cold, getting shutout for the first time this season on the road in a 2-0 loss. Goepfert was solid stopping 32 of 33 shots, but the Lynx went 0 for 6 on the power play in front of a record crowd in Charleston of 10,565.

SLATTENGREN SIGNS PTO WITH PROVIDENCE, WILL MISS ALL-STAR GAME: This past Wednesday Aaron Slattengren signed a professional tryout contract with the Providence Bruins of the American Hockey League. Slattengren, 26, began this season with the Augusta Lynx of the ECHL, where he left leading the league in goals. On the year, the third-year pro has 28 goals and 16 assists for 44 points, along with 30 penalty minutes in 33 ECHL games. The forward made his debut with Providence on Friday night as the Bruins defeated the Lowell Devils, 7-1. Slattegren scored the first two goals of the night for the Bruins. The next night in Worcester, Slattengren was +3 and had two assists in a 4-3 win over the Sharks. Providence is the top team in the AHL with a record of 30-7-2-1 and 63 points. So far in three games with the Bruins, Slattengren has five points. The Duluth, Minnesota, native is having a career season, becoming the first player this season to win the ECHL's In Glas Co Player of the Week award twice, as well as being named to the American Conference squad for the 2008 Chase Chevrolet ECHL All-Star Game. However, because of his recent success with Providence, the Bruins have announced that Slattengren will remain with the club in the upcoming weeks and miss this week's All-Star Game.
GEOFF PETERS RECALLED BY PORTLAND: Head Coach Bob Ferguson has announced the forward Geoff Peters has been recalled by the Portland Pirates, Augusta's AHL affiliate. The week that was:
Tuesday, January 15, Augusta Lynx 1 @ South Carolina Stingrays 5
It was a tough first visit for the Augusta Lynx to Charleston to face the Stingrays on Tuesday. The Stingrays scored early and often, scoring three 1st period goals. The Lynx got off to a flying start the first couple of shifts, but penalties would cost the Lynx. On their first power play of the night, the Stingrays struck for a 1-0 lead off the stick of Matt Reid, who's snap shot found its way past the low blocker side of #30 Bobby Goepfert. The Stingrays second power play netted a second goal, as a shot from the point from Marty Guerin tipped off a Lynx glove and bounced past Goepfert. The Lynx went down 3-0 as Grant McNeill's shot from the point deflected off a Lynx shinpad and past Goepfert. The 2nd period didn't get any better for the Lynx. The best chance of the period was a #16 Chase Watson shot that deflected off the crossbar, but South Carolina would score two more. Travis Morin made in 4-0 with a goal down low, and Scott Romfo made it 5-0 as his shot from the point went again off a Lynx player and past Goepfert. The Lynx did break Josh Johnson's shutout bid with 4:25 to go in the game as #19 Aaron Slattengren scored his league-leading 28th goal of the year with help from #17 Jeremy Schenderling and #9 Louis Goulet. However, the 'Rays made the rest hold up for a 5-1 win.
Friday, January 18, Augusta Lynx 2 @ Charlotte Checkers 3
Close, but no cigar. An Augusta Lynx comeback on Friday night in Charlotte fell just short as they lost to the Checkers 3-2 on Friday night. The Checkers special teams would make the difference, scoring twice on the power play and once shorthanded. Augusta Lynx goaltender #30 Bobby Goepfert posted one of his best starts of the season, stopping 42 of 45 Checkers shots. However, it was the Charlotte second goal that would stand as the controversial one on Friday. On a shorthanded 2 on 1, Goepfert made the original save, however the rebound came to Checkers defenseman Kenton Smith who swatted home the goal with his hand. The goal was allowed to stand and the Checkers were out to a 2-0 lead. The Lynx closed the gap to within 2-1 on #17 Jeremy Schenderling's 5th goal of the season with assists to #11 Matt Christie and #12 Ryan Dingle. The Checkers went up 3-1 on a power play goal from newcomer and first star of the game, Jeff Kyrzakos. The Lynx made it 3-2 in the 3rd period with a goal from #6 Will Bodine off a nice pass from #7 James Brannigan behind the net with more help from #16 Chase Watson. The Lynx thought they had scored the equalizer with three minutes left, but a scrum in front never saw the puck go over the goalline. With Goepfert pulled a tired Lynx team could not manage a chance in the final minute, as they now have dropped all three contests in Charlotte this season.
Saturday, January 19, Augusta Lynx 0 @ South Carolina Stingrays 2
The Augusta Lynx got another strong performance from their goaltender #30 Bobby Goepfert, but again were plagued by power play woes on the road in a 2-0 loss on the road Saturday night in Charleston, South Carolina against the Stingrays. The Stingrays helped out by three power plays in the 3rd period alone, had the final 12 shots of the game, as the Lynx ran out of gas in the 3rd period. After a scoreless 1st period, largely dominated by the Lynx, the Stingrays got on the board first with the eventual game-winning goal from Cail MacLean, who beat Bobby Goepfert on a backdoor goal on a 5 on 3 power play. The Lynx had plenty of power play chances the first two periods, but could not convert, managing only one shot on goal through in the first three power plays. In the 3rd period, Goepfert made several spectacular saves to keep the Lynx in the game. The Lynx thought they had the game tied thanks to a goal from #12 Ryan Dingle, but it was ruled by referee David Jones that Dingle had collided with 'Rays goaltender Davis Parley causing the puck to go into the net despite the fact that the puck was clearly across the line before play was stopped. Despite the objections by the Lynx bench, the call stood and it was as close as the Lynx would get as an empty-net goal sealed their fate with five seconds remaining by Pierre-Luc O'Brien. Goepfert stopped 32 of 33 shots on the night, but suffered the loss. Tonight's 2-0 loss marks the first time all season long that the Lynx have been shutout on the road.
