Alaska Aces News Release

STOCKTON, Calif. - The Alaska Aces have acquired winger Steve Covington from the Phoenix Roadrunners in exchange for cash considerations.

Covington, a six-foot, 187-pound winger from Maple Ridge, B.C., handed out a pair of assists in 10 games earlier this season for Phoenix while accumulating 25 minutes in penalties. He played four full seasons in the Western Hockey League for the Calgary Hitmen, totaling 34 goals and 65 assists over that span. The 21-year-old Covington (he will turn 22 Jan. 31) originally was selected in the seventh round of the 2004 NHL Entry Draft by the Detroit Red Wings. He scored twice and assisted on eight other goals last year in Calgary's run to the WHL semi-finals, where the Hitmen fell in five games to eventual league champion Medicine Hat.

Josh Soares will represent Alaska at the 2008 ECHL All-Star Game in Stockton, Calif., tomorrow at 6:00 p.m. ADT, likely skating on a line with former University of Maine teammate Keith Johnson (who now plays for Utah) and Todd Griffith, making his second straight appearance for Bakersfield. Soares will participate in the Rapid Fire and Accuracy Shooting events during tonight's Skills Competition as well as the Breakaway Relay. The "Voice of the Aces," Jack Michaels, will handle the live play-by-play duties for both the Skills Competition and the All-Star Game, available courtesy of B2 Networks. Coverage of both tonight's Skills Competition and tomorrow's All-Star Game begins at 6:00 p.m. ADT.

The Aces (19-13-5, third in the West Division) open a three-game series at Sullivan Arena against first-place Victoria Friday at 7:15 p.m. Saturday's rematch will start at 7:15 p.m., while Sunday's series finale, featuring a Fred Meyer post-game "Skate with the Aces," begins at 5:05 p.m. Alaska took two of three in Canada against the Salmon Kings prior to Christmas. All regular season games are broadcast live on Alaska's flagship station, AM 750 KFQD, with coverage beginning 15 minutes prior to the opening face-off.
