Florence Y'alls News Release

FLORENCE FREEDOM (34-40) @ NORMAL CORNBELTERS (43-31)

Thursday, August 13, 2015 - 7:35 p.m. ET

The Corn Crib - Normal, IL

Game #75 - Road Game #36 (34-40), (18-17)

LHP #8 Patrick McGrath (1-1, 1.69 ERA) vs. RHP #22 Jake Negrete (1-0, 4.77 ERA)

Last time out...

The Freedom blew a four-run lead as they fell to the CornBelters by a score of 8-7 on Wednesday night at the Corn Crib. Florence took a 6-2 lead when Austin Newell hit a three-run home run in the fourth inning. But Normal chipped away with a run in the fifth and a run in the sixth. Steve Carrillo's RBI single gave the Freedom an insurance run in the 8th as they went up 7-4. But Ethan Gibbons gave up four runs on five hits in the bottom of the eighth. Santiago Chirino and Aaron Dudley started the frame with back-to-back singles. One out later Richard Lucas doubled home a run. Then with two outs, Sam Judah tied the game with a two-RBI single. Ozney Guillen followed with a RBI double to score pinch runner Ty Morris. On the play Zack Burling tripped and fell as the ball bounced over his head and rolled to the wall. Florence went down in order in the ninth as Race Parmenter picked up his second straight save against the Freedom.

For Starters...

Patrick McGrath makes his fourth start of the season tonight. He is coming off a win over the Joliet Slammers on August 7 as he went six and a third innings, allowing only one run on six hits. He did not walk anyone and struck out two. McGrath led the Ohio Valley Conference in wins in 2015 with Belmont University as he posted a 9-4 record with a 4.40 ERA in 17 appearances, 13 starts. He garnered national attention when he beat SEC powerhouse Vanderbilt University twice.

Trying to avoid the sweep...

The Freedom need to win tonight to avoid being swept by the CornBelters for the second time this season. The Freedom have only been swept on the road once this season, when Evansville took all three games against Florence May 22-24 at Historic Bosse Field.

Catching up...

All-Star Sam Eberle makes his first start at catcher as a member of the Freedom tonight. He was drafted as a catcher by the San Francisco Giants in the 25th round in 2012 out of Jacksonville State. He threw out 23 percent of runners trying to steal in 2012, his first and only year in pro ball at the position. Eberle becomes the fifth player to start at catcher this year for Florence, joining All-Star Gaby Juarbe (60-Day DL), Michael Pair (released), Ozzy Gonzalez and Matt Rubino.

Return of Newell...

Austin Newell's return to the Freedom's lineup is already helping the offense as he blasted a three-run homer last night. He currently is hitting .424 with runners in scoring position in 33 at bats. Newell is also hitting a team leading .439 in road games this season.

Offensive woes...

Florence has scored fewer than three runs in 31 games this season and they've been shutout six times. Florence is 3-28 when scoring fewer than three runs in a contest.

Eberle heating up...

All-Star Sam Eberle is hitting .394 (13-33) so far in the month of August with 8 walks and 3 RBI. His struggles with runners in scoring position have continued though as he is hitting .216 in 74 AB's.

Glovework...

The Freedom have the best fielding percentage in the Frontier League at .982.

Walk this way...

The Freedom have drawn 279 walks this season, the second most in the league.

Road Warriors...

The Freedom are 18-17 away from home so far in 2015.

Run like the wind...

The Freedom have stolen 123 bases this season, the most in the Frontier League. They have also been caught 56 times, the most in the league.

Get that lead...

The Freedom are 26-2 when holding the lead after the completion of seven innings. On top of that they are 22-13 when they score first in a game.

Five is the magic number...

The Freedom are 23-4 when they score five or more runs in a game this season.
