
Slammers Edge Grizzlies 6-5 with a Run in the 9th

Sauget, Il The Joliet Slammers won a back and forth battle with Gateway 6-5 on Thursday.
The Slammers (31-44) gave up a late lead but survived another close game with the Grizzlies. Joliet used a home run from Mason Snyder and an RBI double from Joe Staley early and eventually topped Gateway (28-46) in the final game of their series. Joliet also scored on a pair of RBI grounders and a passed ball but it took a run in the 9th to get the victory. Spencer Medick went six-plus innings in a no-decision for Joliet. He allowed five earned runs on five hits. Craig Massoni's home run was the big early hit for Gateway. Dan Tobik inherited a 5-3 Slammers lead in the 7th inning but allowed an RBI single from Ryan Johns and a sac fly from Cody Livesay that tied the game at 5-5. The runs were charged to Medick. The game had also been tied 1-1 and 3-3. A Nate Roberts RBI single in the top of the 9th off former Slammer Jordan Wellander proved to be the game-winner. Joliet's Phil Bates singled in the 9th to extend his hitting streak to 11 games. Navery Moore pitched the bottom of the 9th to earn save number 15. The Slammers now take the long bus ride for a weekend series at Traverse City beginning Friday night.
Joliet returns home for a 2-Dollar Tuesday on August 18th at 7:05pm, to open a three-game series against the Florence Freedom. Wednesday the 19th features an appearance by the all-time hit king Pete Rose. He will put on a Slammers uniform to coach the bases for two innings and also sign autographs. The Joliet Slammers play at Silver Cross Field in downtown Joliet, Illinois, and are members of the professional, independent Frontier League.
