The Owen Sound Attack watched another 3rd period lead slip away on Thursday night, but this time, Markus Phillips played hero for the Bayshore Boys, handing Owen Sound a 6-5 overtime win in the most recent installment of the Highway 26 Rivalry.

An early Baywest Nissan Powerplay for the Attack proved fruitful, with Ethan Szypula scoring his 2nd goal in as many games to put Owen Sound up 1-0 just 5:06 into the game.

Szypula's goal, which came on helpers from Markus Phillips and Brady Lyle, saw the overage forward feed Lyle the puck at the point before making a beeline to the net where he was able to swat home the rebound from a Lyle point shot for the tally.

The one goal lead was short lived, however.

Less than a minute after Szypula put Owen Sound up, Dmitry Sokolov smacked home a backhander from just on top of the Attack crease to bring Barrie even at a goal apiece.

That 1-1 score is what stood after 20:00 of play, but when things resumed in the middle stanza the goals began to come quickly.

First, it was Kevin Hancock and Nick Suzuki connecting on a pretty passing play while the Attack were shorthanded to give the visiting side a lead.

With 3:10 gone into the 2nd, Suzuki forced the Colts' powerplay to bobble the puck inside their own zone which allowed the Vegas Golden Knights' prospect to quickly go on an odd man rush.

Suzuki then proceeded to walk around Colts' goaltender Kai Edmonds before feeding the puck behind the tendy, through the crease, and onto the stick of Kevin Hancock for an easy tap in.

Then, just over a minute later, the Attack struck off of a faceoff deep in Barrie territory.

Despite losing the draw, Aidan Dudas made his way to the slot and patiently waited for Ethan Szypula to feed the Parry Sound native the puck, where he immediately one-timed it home for his 29th goal of the year and a 3-1 Attack lead.

And Owen Sound wasn't done there either.

With Andrei Svechnikov in the bin for high sticking, Markus Phillips took a slick feed from Ethan Szypula and quickly put a wrist shot on net that fooled Edmonds for a 4-1 advantage at the 6:33 mark of the 2nd.

Just like the first goal, Brady Lyle would also get in on the play, which constituted Szypula's 3rd point of the evening.

But Svechnikov was able to atone for his mistake that led to the Phillips goal, and less than 2:00 after they found themselves down 4-1, Barrie was able to cut the Attack's lead to just two goals when the draft eligible Russian fooled Olivier Lafreniere with a shot from the high slot.

After the teams combined for four goals in a 5:00 stretch, there was a lull in the scoring until the Colts made it 4-3 with 2:30 to play before the 2nd intermission.

A bad bounce on a Cole Cameron clearing attempt saw the puck rocket off of Andrei Svechnikov's skate and onto the stick of Dmitry Sokolov who quickly whistled his 2nd of the night past Lafreniere.

The Attack weren't going to let the home side get much closer though, and just 40 seconds later, Alan Lyszczarczyk created a turnover in the Barrie zone before snapping his 18th of the campaign off the cross bar and into the back of the Colts' cage to make it 5-3, a lead that would hold for Owen Sound heading into the 3rd period.

But just 49 seconds into that final frame the Attack found themselves tied at five with Barrie after a pair of quick goals by the Colts.

First, it was Jason Wilms scoring on a sneaky wraparound with only 22 seconds having elapsed in the frame before Andrei Svechnikov redirected home his 2nd of the evening a mere 27 seconds later to make it a 5-5 game.

Following Barrie's 5th goal, Attack head coach Todd Gill opted to bring Mack Guzda on in relief for Olivier Lafreniere who surrendered five goals on 19 shots on the night.

The goaltending change seemed to steady the Attack, and they were able to weather Barrie's push to complete the comeback before an overtime period was needed.

After some furious end to end action early in that OT frame, the Attack were able to avoid going home having lost a game where they had yet another 3rd period lead.

Ethan Szypula and Maksim Sushko worked the puck down low in the Colts' zone before getting it back to Markus Phillips at the point.

Phillips, who had already recorded a goal and an assist on the evening, walked the blueline before sneaking into the high slot and wiring his 2nd of the night, and the game winning goal, past Kai Edmonds to hand Owen Sound a nailbiting 6-5 overtime win.

Mack Guzda recorded the win on the night, turning aside all 13 shots he faced in relief of Lafreniere, while Phillips was named the Mac Taylor Corporation 1st Star of the Game.

Barrie's Dmitry Sokolov and Andrei Svechnikov picked up 2nd and 3rd star honours respectively.

The Mark McDade Chestnut Park Shots on Goal finished at 45-32 in favour of Owen Sound on the evening.

The Attack will be in action again on Saturday when they host the Saginaw Spirit at 7:30pm. They will then wrap up the weekend by playing host to the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds in the team's final Investment Planning Counsel Sunday game of the season at 2:00pm on March 11.

Fans are reminded that the first 200 children through the doors will receive free popcorn, while all kids in attendance at the game are eligible to win a team autographed jersey.
