Saginaw Spirit News Release
THIS WEEK IN SPIRIT HOCKEY:
On Wednesday night, the Saginaw Spirit (27-25-8-0) hosted the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds (50-6-2-2) for the second of four consecutive contests at The Dow Event Center. The Greyhounds wasted little time in scoring less than two minutes into the game off a Ryan Roth deflection. The Spirit fared better in the second period with a goal courtesy of Nicholas Porco, countering Sault Ste. Marie's goal in the middle frame. During the third frame, however, the Greyhounds extended their 2-1 edge with a well-placed Taylor Raddysh shot before adding an empty net tally to finish the game as a 4-1 Greyhounds' victory.
On Saturday night, the Saginaw Spirit (27-26-8-0) welcomed the Windsor Spitfires (29-27-3-2) for the third leg of a four-game homestand at The Dow Event Center. In the contest, Windsor exhibited a balanced attack and scored at least once in each period with two goals coming in the final frame. Windsor defenseman Connor Corcoran recorded two assists on the night and Michael DiPietro earned his 7th shutout of the season as the Spitfires secured a 4-0 victory in front of a crowd of 4,816.
On Sunday night, the Saginaw Spirit (28-26-8-0) hosted the Eastern Conference's Sudbury Wolves (15-38-9-0) for the final edition of a four-game homestand at The Dow Event Center. In the opening frame, Saginaw snapped their offensive drought with a three-goal period and entered the second stanza with a 3-1 lead. During the second period, both clubs put a goal on the scoreboard as Damien Giroux guided a wrist shot past Wolves goaltender Jake McGrath and Sudbury's Drake Pilon responded with his 2nd goal of the contest. The third period saw an empty net goal from Cole Coskey, which put the game firmly out of reach at 5-2. With tonight's win, the Spirit secure a 2017-18 playoff berth, which marks the team's 12th postseason appearance in the last 13 seasons.
