Attack Stymied by Storm in 4-0 Defeat
September 27, 2019 - Ontario Hockey League (OHL)
Owen Sound Attack News Release
The Owen Sound Attack went to Guelph tonight looking to keep their momentum rolling after a big 10-0 win over the Barrie Colts. The defending champions have seen a lot of roster turnover through the offseason, but captain Cam Hillis (Montreal draft selection) and Minnesota Wild prospect Fedor Gordeev are difference makers for a young Storm team.
Heading into the first period, Owen Sound was hoping to jump to an early road lead and continue the pressure all night long. Unfortunately, Guelph was prepared and played a solid defensive game to limit Attack chances. The best opportunity of the period came off the stick of a former Storm player, when Barret Kirwin charged across the blue line and ripped a shot off the crossbar. Mack Guzda didn't see much work in the frame, but turned away all 3 Guelph Shots that came his direction.
The 2nd period started out poorly for the Attack, with the Storm scoring three times in quick succession to open up the game. Uba, Bakanov and McFarlane all got their first of the season and all of a sudden the Bears were staring up from a deep hole. Owen Sound began pushing back, but Nico Daws couldn't be solved and the Attack would go into the break down 4-0 after a goal late from Keegan Stevenson.
The Attack needed to strike early in the 3rd to get themselves back into the contest, but Guelph continued to stymie Owen Sound with a tight defensive game plan. Halfway through the period, Matt Philip had a shorthanded breakaway but once again Daws shut the door to keep the Attack shut out. Neither team could find the back of the net to wrap up the game, and Guelph would take the first of the home and home series by a score of 4-0.
The Hatten Home Building Centre Hardest Working Player of the Game was Kaleb Lawrence in his OHL Debut. The Three Stars of the Game were Nico Daws (23 saves, shutout), Andrei Bakanov (1G), and Eric Uba (1G).
The Owen Sound Attack will host the Guelph Storm tomorrow night for #SticksForSoldiers. Bring your new or gently used hockey sticks to the Bayshore to be donated to military members stationed overseas. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
