Attack Partner with CMHA
February 23, 2016 - Ontario Hockey League (OHL)
Owen Sound Attack News Release
The Owen Sound Attack and Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA), Grey Bruce Branch are teaming up to raise awareness about the importance of mental health during Wednesday's home game against the Niagara Ice Dogs.
Wednesday's game against Niagara will feature a CMHA-run kiosk so fans can learn more about mental health, promotional videos and public address announcements. The player videos with Markus Phillips, Ethan Szypula and Santino Centorame can be found by clicking here.
The awareness campaign is part of the ongoing commitment by the Owen Sound Attack and CMHA Grey-Bruce to implement Talk Today. Announced in October 2014, Talk Today is a partnership between the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) and CHMA Ontario. It provides mental health support to players and raises awareness about mental health and suicide throughout OHL communities.
A key piece of the Talk Today program has been to educate players and staff about mental health and suicide. Each season, every OHL team receives mental health training specific to suicide awareness. Each team is also now linked to a CMHA Mental Health Coach, who provides support and mental health resources to individuals in need.
"We are so excited to be able to partner with the Owen Sound Attack to bring messages around good mental health to the hockey rink.", stated Jackie Ralph of the CMHA Grey Bruce. "We give huge thanks to the team and coaching staff in helping to shatter the stigma around mental health. The social media messages from the OHL teams such as #Iwillstandbyyou will go a long way to making that cultural shift that is so necessary in getting people the help they need when they need it."
"Today's youth, particularly our student-athletes in the Ontario Hockey League are under an intense microscope and amount of pressure. We want to ensure that they have the skills, tools and the confidence needed to help themselves and each other.", said Brent Fisher, Director of Marketing and Public Relations for the Owen Sound Attack. "Education in Mental Health is extremely important and we are very proud of our partnership with Jackie and the tremendous job she does."
Tickets for the game are still available at the DJ's Furniture Owen Sound Attack Box Office, online at www.attackhockey.com or by calling (519) 371-7452.
