(Hamilton) - The Hamilton Bulldogs and Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA) Hamilton are teaming up to raise awareness about the importance of mental health during an upcoming Hamilton Bulldogs home game.

The awareness campaign is part of the ongoing commitment by the Hamilton Bulldogs and CMHA Hamilton to implement Talk Today. Announced in October 2014, Talk Today is a partnership between the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) and CHMA Ontario. It provides mental health support to players and raises awareness about mental health and suicide throughout OHL communities.

A key piece of the Talk Today program has been to educate players about mental health and suicide. Every OHL team received mental health training specific to suicide awareness last season and new players were trained this fall. Each team is also now linked to a CMHA Mental Health Coach, who provides support and mental health resources to individuals in need.

"The Talk Today initiative aligns with the Canadian Mental Health Association's values that include reducing stigma associated with mental health. Statistics suggest that stigma is the number one reason why individuals do not seek help. As with any team sport, camaraderie is a key component to success and through the Talk Today initiative, CMHA and the Hamilton Bulldogs encourage players to support each other both on and off the ice, and to foster a culture where everyone feels comfortable with reaching out for support when needed," said Craig Marenick, Mental Health Promotion & Resilience Facilitator, CMHA Hamilton.

"When an athlete is physically injured, there is often a team of doctors, trainers and physiotherapists available to ensure a speedy recovery, and because of Talk Today, we are moving forward in supporting mental health care," said Hamilton Bulldogs President Steve Staios. "As an OHL team we committed to this initiative and it aligns with the Bulldogs Foundation's mission - to enrich the lives of youth in the Greater Hamilton area and aims to promote the creativity of interactive programs involving education, physical fitness and personal well-being."

Tickets for the game are still available and are available from $14. For ticket information, call 1-866-DOGS-TIX (364-7849) or 905-529-8500.
