Brockton Rox News Release
Atlantic City, NJ (September 2, 2007) - The Atlantic City Surf scored an unearned run in the bottom of the eighth inning and held off a Rox threat in the ninth to best the Brockton Rox 3-2 at Bernie Robbins Stadium in Atlantic City, NJ in the penultimate game of the 2007 Rox season. SS Jorge Mejia had three hits for the Rox in the loss while CF Matt Maloney had a pair of singles. LHP Bryan Morse tossed a quality start on the hill, allowing just two runs in a no-decision. Former Rox LHP Donavon Hendricks was the winner on the mound for the Surf, dropping the Rox to 41-51 in 2007, 21-25 in the second half with just one game to play in 2007.
The Rox scored a run in the second inning when with one out, Maloney singled and Mejia legged out an infield base hit. On Mejia's groundball, Atlantic City 2B Ed Montague threw the ball into the first-base dugout, allowing both runners to move into scoring position. Maloney scored moments later on an RBI groundout off the bat of 3B Melvin Falu. The Surf tied the game at one on a Montague single one inning later.
Both RHP J.C. Huguet, Atlantic City's starter, and Morse pitched well into the sixth. In the bottom of the sixth, Morse allowed a solo HR to Surf 1B Clyde Williams, giving Atlantic City a short-lived 2-1 lead. The Rox scored in the seventh inning when Maloney raced home on a double-steal attempt, limping to the plate after an apparent injury. The Rox tied the game at two but got no closer, stranding the potential go-ahead run on base.
In the bottom of the eighth against Rox RHP Matt Reilly, Surf C Joe Burke drew a one-out walk. Williams singled and after a groundout, SS David Keese drew a free pass to load the bases. The Surf did not use a DH in the game and Hendricks, who came out of the bullpen to pitch a scoreless top of the eighth, came to the plate. He hit a slow roller to third that Falu fielded cleanly but threw low to first base, allowing a run to score and the Surf to take the lead. Mejia singled in the ninth inning but Surf RHP Greg Runser struck out LF Chris Scarola to give the Surf the game.
Monday night in Atlantic City, the Rox play the final game of their 2007 season, sending RHP Mike McTamney (5-10, 3.50 ERA) to the mound for his 22nd start of the season. When McTamney throws his first pitch Monday, he will establish a new Can-Am League record for starts in a season. He will face off against a TBA starter for Atlantic City. First pitch of the season's finale game is scheduled for 7:05 PM. Radio coverage begins at 6:45 PM on 1460 AM WXBR and online streaming at www.brocktonrox.com.
