Atlantic City Surf News Release
ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (May 25, 2003) â Surf southpaw Andy High tossed six scoreless innings and allowed just two hits to lead Atlantic City over the Newark Bears, 6-0, on a foggy Sunday afternoon at the Sandcastle.
High (2-1) cruised through six frames, striking out six and walking three in winning his second straight decision.
Atlantic City struck first in the second inning after Pat Burns bashed a two-run home run that plated Brandon Jackson, who led off with a single. Raul Marval then walked and was advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Willy Ruiz. Marval would score on a base-hit by Brian Simmons.
With the score 4-0 in favor of the Surf, Marval roped a line-drive two-run homer, his first of the season, over the left-field wall to give Atlantic City a decisive six-run lead.
The Atlantic City bullpen of Travis Thompson, Anthony Shelby, and Randi Mallard held the Bears scoreless through the final three innings to preserve the win. Surf pitchers struck out a season-high 12 total batters.
Francisco Lebron had all of Newark's three hits, all singles.
Simmons, Jackson, and Marval had two hits apiece to lead the Surf, who improve to 10-11 on the season. Newark falls to 12-10.
ON DECK: The Surf begin a three-game series with the Pennsylvania Road Warriors starting with a Memorial Day special on Monday, May 26, at 1:35 p.m., at the Sandcastle.
