Berkshire Black Bears News Release
Yogi Berra Stadium has yet to produce fond memories for the Berkshire Black Bears, as they have suffered a rain out, two long delays, and three defeats at the Jackals home park in 2003, (8-2 and 7-0 last night). The first game started off well for the visitors as they jumped on New Jersey starter John Desilva early, scoring two runs on three hits in the top of the first. However, the aggressive hitting would only last one frame. The Boys from Berkshire were shutout the rest of the way, and the Jackals scored 8 unanswered runs, including an explosive 5-run mauling in the sixth. Desilva (1-0) picked up the win, throwing 5 innings, allowing 6 hits, 2 runs, and striking out four. Courtney Hall (0-1) took the loss in his first start in a Black Bears' uniform. Hall had 6 strikeouts and 3 earned runs over just three and a third innings.
In the second game of the twilight doubleheader, number three starter Jackson Crowther stole the show with a fantastic outing, throwing 5 shutout innings, recording 5 strikeouts, walking none and allowing just three hits, as the Jackals cruised 7-0. The Black Bears committed a pair of errors, the first of which led to New Jersey's big 4-run third inning. Darren Blakely and Travis Bailey each homered, the first shots of the series as the Jackals continued to punish the Berkshire pitching staff. Questions of the umpires' impartialness flew around the Stadium since the Black Bears clearly suffered on calls at the plate. Lefthander Matt Minter (0-1) picked up the loss on a frustrating and damp night in the Garden State. Tim Bausher throws in the series finale, a Sunday Matinee at the House That Yogi Built.
