Atlanta United FC News Release
ATLANTA - Atlanta United defeated C.F. Monterrey 1-0 Wednesday night in front of 40,048 fans at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in the Second Leg of the Quarterfinals in the Scotiabank Concacaf Champions League but lost 3-1 on aggregate and was eliminated from the tournament. Josef Martinez scored his third goal of the tournament and his fourth goal this season across all competitions while Atlanta became the first Major League Soccer team to beat Monterrey since 2011.
Atlanta's attack came out fast and nearly grabbed an early goal in the 10th minute. After a turnover in the midfield, Josef Martinez picked up the loose ball and passed to Ezequiel Barco. The Argentine sent a through ball into 18-yard box where it found Martinez near the penalty spot, but the Venezuelan's shot was denied by a diving Marcelo Barovero.
Gonzalo Martinez nearly scored twice within five minutes, beginning in the 37th minute when he took a shot from 30-plus yards that knuckled in the air and was destined for the top-left corner, but was tipped over the bar for a corner. Later in the 41st minute, the Argentine received a pass from Eric Remedi on the right flank, dribbled past a pair of Monterrey defenders and curled a shot from the edge of the penalty area that flew just over the left corner.
Atlanta continued to pile on pressure in the second half. Darlington Nagbe had a shot deflected inches wide of the post while a teasing cross from Julian Gressel narrowly missed a sliding Josef Martinez inside the six-yard box. Atlanta finally broke through in the 77th minute. Following a corner, Martinez received the ball on the left side and laid it off to Nagbe at the top of the penalty area and made a run into the box. In a give-and-go, Nagbe delivered a sharp, no-look pass back to Martinez who took one touch before blasting a shot into the top-right corner.
Atlanta United returns to MLS action Sunday, March 17 against Philadelphia Union (7:00 p.m. EST, Fox Sports South) at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.
