Atlanta United FC News Release
ATLANTA - Atlanta United fell 2-1 to New York City FC on Sunday afternoon in front of 43,312 fans at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in the club's final match of the 2022 season. Atlanta fell behind by a pair of goals, but Andrew Gutman pulled one goal back in the second half. However, the home side couldn't find an equalizer despite putting three of its nine shots on target in the second half.
NYCFC opened the scoring in the ninth minute through Gabriel Pereira. Talles Magno found the run of his Brazilian compatriot with a one-time pass into the box. Pereira finished past Raùl Gudiño to put the visitors up 1-0.
Héber doubled NYCFC's advantage in the 60th minute. Pereira sent in a corner kick which was headed on by Alexander Callens toward the edge of the six-yard box, where Héber volleyed a shot past halftime substitute Rocco Ríos Novo.
Some fantastic passing play pulled a goal back for Atlanta in the 67th minute. Luiz Araújo dinked a pass over the top of NYCFC's back four, which Thiago Almada lobbed first time toward the back post. Gutman was there to guide his fourth goal of the season into the back of the net.
Gutman was close to netting his second and leveling the score line in the 81st minute, but a diving save from Sean Johnson kept the hosts from equalizing.
