ATLANTA - Atlanta United picked up a 3-3 draw at Chicago Fire FC on Saturday night. Giorgos Giakoumakis scored a brace off the bench while Andrew Gutman scored his second goal of the season in a back and forth contest at Soldier Field.
After a cagey beginning to the match, Atlanta had its first good scoring chance in the 17th minute. Ronald Hernández received the ball on the right side of the box and pulled it back to Thiago Almada near the penalty spot, but the Argentine's first-time shot went over the bar. Nine minutes later, Chicago was reduced to 10 men as Federico Navarro picked up his second yellow card of the match. On the ensuing free kick, Almada curled the ball to the right corner forcing Chris Brady into a diving save. The rebound fell to a wide open Gutman who one-timed his finish into the open net for the game's opening goal.
Chicago found an equalizer on a set piece of its own in the 43rd minute. Xherdan Shaqiri sent a corner directly on frame at the near post. Quentin Westberg made a diving save, however the ball bounced off an Atlanta defender an into the net for an own goal as the teams went into halftime tied at 1-1.
Atlanta made one change at halftime, bringing on Giakoumakis in attack, yet it was Chicago who struck first to take a 2-1 lead just four minutes into the second half. Kacper Przybylko chested a long ball in the box down to the feet of Maren Haile-Selassie, who one-timed a low driven shot past Westberg at the near post. Atlanta didn't take long to find a response. Hernandez floated a cross to the back post where Gutman rose above his defender to redirect the header back into the six-yard box. Giakoumakis was first to react and pounced from close range for his seventh goal of the season.
In the 64th minute, Atlanta re-took the lead on a beautiful goal by Giakoumakis. The Greek striker curled his run on a counter attack as Almada played him a through ball. Giakoumakis rounded the keeper and slotted the ball home. The play was initially called offside but was the goal was given after video review.
In the 71st minute, Atlanta was reduced to 10 men when Luiz Araújo picked up his second yellow card of the match. Chicago scored in the 89th minute through Georgios Koutsias to level the match at 3-3.
