PHOENIX - It was a historic night on Thursday as Phoenix Mercury star Diana Taurasi became the first WNBA player to reach 10,000 career points.

Taurasi reached the 10,000 point mark with a deep 3-point shot with 8:24 left in the third quarter.

The Atlanta Dream were on the Footprint Center court for the moment and discussed what it means for women's basketball.

"It's just special," said Dream head coach Tanisha Wright. "What are we in our 27th year? Diana's played (19) years. And so for her to be able to accomplish that feat is definitely special. Congratulations to her."

Atlanta guard Aari McDonald also talked about the moment and its importance for women's basketball.

"That means a lot," McDonald said. "... Big kudos to her."

Before the game on Thursday, Dream guard Danielle Robinson, who played a season in 2017 with Taurasi in Phoenix, discussed her time as a teammate with the Mercury legend.

"I think Dee was so fun to play with," Robinson said. "From the moment I got here, she welcomed me with open arms. Such a great teammate. Always looking out. Wants the best for everybody. I think I was there when she took over the most points in the league. I think that was the year that I was here. So yeah, obviously, great player. Even better person."

Wright spent 14 seasons in the WNBA during the time Taurasi's career was in full swing and talked about playing against her.

"Anytime you can compete against one of the best - like Dee is arguably one of the best players that ever played our game," Wright said. "So to be able to go out there and just compete against something like that every single night - I knew every night that it was going to be a battle. I knew every night that I had to be prepared and ready ... . And I knew every night there was a possibility that I would get it handed to me but that she would have to work for that. So Dee is just such a fierce competitor and when you compete at that level and when you're a competitor yourself, it makes it fun."'
