Atlanta United 2 News Release
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Atlanta United 2 lost 4-0 to Birmingham Legion FC at BBVA Field Saturday night.
Legion FC took the lead in the fifth minute when Brian Wright tapped in a cross from Kyle Culbertson. Birmingham later doubled its lead in the 39th minute as Mathieu Laurent headed in a corner kick from Daigo Kobayashi.
ATL UTD 2 began to find its rhythm and took nine of its 12 shots in the second half. Moments after checking into the match in the 53rd minute, Bienvenue Kanakimana was played down right flank and sent a ball aimed at the back post for Jackson Conway, but it was cleared away at the last moment by Kyle Fisher.
Conway again had a close-range chance turned away in the 56th minute. Jack Metcalf delivered a corner kick into the center of the box where George Campbell headed the ball down and it eventually found Conway on the edge of the six-yard box, but he had his shot attempt stopped and cleared away by goalkeeper Matt Van Oekel.
Birmingham added to its lead in the 89th minute when Daniel Johnson scored and Prosper Kasim converted a penalty in stoppage time.
ATL UTD 2 (3-11-4, 13 points) returns to action Wednesday, July 24 against Charlotte Independence at 7:30 p.m. EST at Fifth Third Bank Stadium. The match will be streamed live on ESPN+.
