Fresno FC vs. Portland Timbers 2 Preview
July 20, 2019 - United Soccer League Championship (USL)
Fresno FC News Release
The Foxes (9-2-7, 34 points) are riding a club-record four-match winning streak and will look to extend that even further against a fifth-place Portland Timbers 2 side that is better on the road (4-3- 3) than on its home turf (3-2-4). The last time the two sides met, Fresno native and ex-Fresno Fuego defender salvaged a point for Portland (7-5-7, 28 points), scoring against his hometown club in stoppage time in a 2-2 draw on June 16th.
Fresno seeks its first win against Portland at Chukchansi Park, with the two teams playing to a 2-2 draw when they met here one year ago. To achieve the goal, Fresno will need to contain a Portland side that is hungry for its first win in five matches having drawn one (Tulsa) and lost three (Sacramento, Phoenix, Reno). Forward Dairon Asprilla and Brayan Hurtado leads Timbers 2 in scoring with six and five goals, respectively. Additionally, Hurtado has proven dangerous on the road, netting four of his five goals away from Portland. But the goals have come from all over for Portland, with its 36 goals - ranked fifth highest in the USL Championship - coming from 13 different scorers. Connecting a meat of those is midfielder Eryk Williamson, whose seven assists are second-most in the USL Championship. Defender Modou Jadama leads Portland in clearances (78) and blocks (12).
Setting the pace for Fresno are forwards Jemal Johnson and Qudus Lawal, who lead the club in scoring with seven goals each. Captain Juan Caffa leads the Foxes with 34 chances created and picked up his fourth assist of the season in last week's win over New Mexico. Fresno assists leader Jackson and forward Jaime Chavez return to the lineup after serving one-match suspensions for the misconduct in Week 18 against Sacramento.
HEAD-TO-HEAD1-0-2 all-time The two sides played to a 2-2 draw nearly a month ago on June 16 at Providence Park. Fresno has the only win in the series, a 4-2 result at Merlo Field in 2018.
