Charlotte Checkers News Release
CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The Checkers were down three goals in the third period to the visiting Florida Everblades and clawed their way back to tie the contest wining one of the longest shootouts in team history by a score of 6-5 on a goal by Ryan Murphy.
The Everblades made sure to break the shutout streak that started on Tuesday against them at Time Warner Cable Arena. It only took 2:46 into the first period for Doug O'Brien to blast a one-timer past Charlotte goalie Maxime Daigneault. Later, Florida forward Colin Nicholson tipped a rebound past Daigneault at 9:31. The period would end with Florida sporting a 2-0 advantage.
Charlotte came out with a purpose in the second period tying the contest on back-to-back goals. The first was scored on the power play by Julien Brouillette when he redirected a pass from Chris Capraro past Chris Beckford-Tseu at 9:33. Charlotte tied the contest after P.J. Corsi skated into the high slot and wristed a shot between the legs of the Everblades netminder at 11:21 locking the contest at 2-2. Florida's Milan Gajic retrieved his team's one-goal lead when he weaved through traffic and beat Daigneault with a shot just inside the left post at 17:13.
Florida started the third period with two goals, the first of which came from Mathieu Roy when he blasted a rebound shot past the right pad of Daigneault at 1:29 during a power-play. Florida would grab a 5-3 lead when Ross Carlsson made a nice move on Daigneault as he skated to the net and edged the puck past the goal-line at 5:31. Charlotte began their comeback on the power play when Ethan Graham's point shot flew past Beckford-Tseu at 8:44. Charlotte blueliner Michael Busto snuck a shot between the legs of the Florida goalie just one minute and nine seconds later making it a 5-4 game. With just under a minute and a half left in regulation, the referee ruled that Beckford-Tseu dislodged his net from its pegs and called for a penalty shot at center ice. Checkers forward Chris Capraro took the moment to tie the game firing a shot over the glove of Beckford-Tseu tying the game at 5-5.
Neither team was able to score in overtime and as a result, the game went to a shootout. The Checkers received a goal from Ryan Hiller and the Everblades got one from Mark Lee. During the sudden death portion, both goalies continued to make saves until Ryan Murphy, the games 20th shooter, roofed a back-hand shot into the Everblades goal for the 6-5 victory.
Notes: Daigneault stopped 39 of 45 shots while Beckford-Tseu turned aside 30 of 35...Chris Capraro ended the game with one goal and three assists...Brad Ralph's 14 game point streak ended...
