ONTARIO, Calif. - The Ontario Reign, proud affiliate of the NHL Los Angeles Kings and AHL Manchester Monarchs, defeated the Victoria Salmon Kings, 5-3, Wednesday evening before a crowd of 4,582 fans at Citizens Business Bank Arena.

Victoria opened up the scoring at 6:58 when right wing Wes Goldie stole the puck and jammed it behind Ontario netminder Jeff Zatkoff. Goldie's unassisted goal gave the Salmon Kings an early 1-0 lead.

Ontario answered back at 15:30 when forward Mike Howe received a pass from defenseman David Walker at the top of the crease. Howe flipped the puck to forward Dale Reinhardt, who was waiting on the opposite side of the crease and buried the puck behind Victoria netminder Julien Ellis. The score remained tied, 1-1, as the clubs headed into the second period of play.

Mike Howe fired a shot at the net which bounced off of Ellis' pads and back out into the play. Dale Reinhardt grabbed the rebound and launched the puck into the top shelf to give the Reign a 2-1 lead at 5:44. Defenseman Darren McMillan also registered an assist on the goal.

The Reign scored their third unanswered goal and extended their lead, 3-1 at 14:52. During a power play, right wing Jon Rheault took a shot on net that rebounded off Ellis' pads. Defenseman Andrew Martens captured the rebound and launched a backhand past Ellis and into the net. Left wing Ryan MacGregor registered the secondary assist on the play.

Less than three minutes later, Victoria cut the Reign lead to one with a goal from center Chris St. Jacques that beat Zatkoff on his glove side. Right wing Olivier Labelle and defenseman Gary Gladue notched the assists. The teams headed into the final period of play with the Reign leading, 3-2.

The first 17 minutes of the third period yielded no goals for either team. At 17:18, the Reign added two more goals to their score. The first was an unassisted goal from defenseman David Walker, who stuffed the puck into the net between Ellis' pads and the post. Less than two minutes later, center Bud Holloway scored his first goal as a member of the Reign when he hurled a shot past Ellis off assists from center Jon Francisco and right wing Brad Mehalko.

Victoria defenseman Matt Kelly answered back at 19:28, when he heaved the puck past Zatkoff off assists from right wing Curtis Billsten and center Shaun Landolt. The Salmon Kings' goal wasn't enough to top Ontario, and the Reign went on to win the match with a final score of Reign 5, Victoria 3.
