Daytona Tortugas News Release

Daytona Beach, FL - The Tortugas took the rubber match of a three-game series against the Clearwater Threshers, 7-4 on Monday night at Radiology Associates Field at Jackie Robinson Ballpark.

RHP Barrett Astin (W, 3-1) went the first 6.1 innings and gave up just six hits and two runs (one earned). Astin finished with a career-high eight strikeouts and did not walk a batter.

The Threshers struck first in the second inning with an unearned run. Chase Numata reached on a single, stole second base, moved to third on an infield single and scored on a passed ball.

Daytona tied the score in the fourth on a triple from DH Sebastian Elizalde and a run-scoring double by 1B Robert Ramirez. He now has nine runs batted in through his last six games. In the fifth inning, CF Junior Arias gave the Tortugas a 3-1 lead with a two-run blast off the scoreboard in left center.

SS Alex Blandino followed the blast with a single, and Elizalde drew a walk to chase Victor Arano (L, 0-6) from the game. Ramirez greeted Cody Forsythe with a two-run triple to right-center, extending Daytona's lead to 5-1.

Clearwater bounced back with an RBI groundout in the top of the seventh to scratch across the only earned run against Astin and narrow the deficit to 5-2, but the Tortugas answered with a pair of sacrifice flies in the bottom of the inning to take a 7-2 lead.

LHP Joel Bender (H, 5) retired the first five men he faced, but a pair of singles and a two-out error forced Eli Marrero to bring in RHP El'Hajj Muhammad (S, 5), who struck out Andrew Pullin to end the game. He's now recorded a save in four of Daytona's last five wins.

With the 2-1 series victory, the Tortugas have a six-game lead over the Threshers and Yankees with 19 games remaining in the first half.
