Palm Beach Cardinals News Release
JUPITER, Fla. - The Palm Beach Cardinals (24 - 27) were defeated by the Charlotte Stone Crabs by a score of 2 - 0 for the second time this series. The two runs Charlotte scored this game were unearned after Palm Beach committed three errors. Charlotte now holds a 8 - 1 season record over the Cardinals.
In what should have been an extra inning game, the Cardinals suffered their second straight loss, the sixth loss in the last 10 games. Over the span of the last 10 games, five of those six losses were by two runs, the other loss was three. It was the ninth time the Cardinals have been shut out and the ninth time they've lost by two this season.
Starting pitcher for Palm Beach, Trey Nielsen, suffered the loss, evening his record at 4 - 4. In his ninth start this season, Nielsen pitched his fourth quality start and it was his fifth time he didn't allow an earned run while on the mound. He pitched eight solid innings, his longest outing this season and he topped his season high of six strikeouts.
In the top of the third, he walked the leadoff batter, his only walk of the game. With Juniel Querecuto on board, he advanced to second on a groundout and then to third on a single. With runners on the corners, Braxton Lee laid down a bunt that rolled right to Nielsen. Nielsen was able to flip the ball to catcher, Carson Kelly, to get Querecuto out at home plate.
After eight innings, Josh Lucas came to the mound to shut down the Stone Crabs in their last inning to score. Lucas accomplished that, striking out the first two batters he faced. Charlotte's last batter, Armando Araiza, grounded out to end the half inning.
The Stone Crabs' starting pitcher, Jacob Faria, went toe to toe with Nielsen, throwing eight innings as well. With the win, his record improved to 9 - 1, the best in the Florida State League. In the last inning, Brad Schreiber entered the game to pitch the last inning, collecting his 13th save on the season.
The Cardinals will stay at Roger Dean Stadium and split and a two game series with the Jupiter Hammerheads on June 2 and 3. Both games have a start time of 6:35 p.m. To purchase tickets, please call (561) 630-1828 or visit RogerDeanStadium.com.
