2006 RATTLERS: The Rattlers are coming off of their biggest win of the season after upsetting the Nashville Kats, 51-49, for their second-straight home victory. They look to go for three in a row at US Airways Center, as the Orlando Predators come to town. Last week's win put Arizona is in a four-way tie for first place in the West at 2-4. QB Sherdrick Bonner has stayed healthy since returning from a shoulder injury, throwing for 1,171 yards and 20 touchdowns in his last four games. Another veteran, WR/LB Randy Gatewood, has recorded touchdown receptions in four of his first five games and continues to contribute on defense as he pulled in two interceptions in last week's victory. The team has also brought back FB/LB Bo Kelly. New faces include OS Damien Groce, who is the team's leading receiver with 37 catches for 544 yards and 11 touchdowns in five games. Other key additions include WR/LB Cosmo DeMatteo, who has caught 20 passes in the last three games, and WR/DB Curtis Fagan. Eight of the returnees are linemen, including Wendall Gaines and Kelvin Ingram. Defensively, the team relies on DS Joe Todd, too fill in for veteran DS Clarence Lawson, who is the team's leading tackler and is on the injured reserve list. RATTLER HEAD COACH: Gene Nudo enters his first season as head coach to become the third head coach in franchise history. Nudo joined the Rattlers coaching staff in 1995 as an assistant head coach before becoming a part of the team's front office in 1996. A true pioneer in the AFL, Nudo coached the first-ever Arena Football games in Rockford, Ill. (1986) as well as its "Showcase Game" in Rosemont, Ill. (1987). He would later serve as the Director of Player Personnel and assistant coach for the Chicago Bruisers (1987-88), helping guide them to a berth in ArenaBowl II.
THIS WEEK'S QUOTES:
Rattler head coach Gene Nudo on last week's win against Nashville: "Even though we squandered a big lead, our guys kept playing. We made the plays we had to down at the end. I was pleased with our performance, but we are still a ways from being where we want to be. Our line stuck to their game plan well and did a good job at protecting the quarterback."
Nudo on Orlando: "They are similar to Nashville in a lot of ways. They have a good pass rush and are extremely physical. They have a mobile quarterback that plays with a lot of energy. We are going to have to focus on their running game. They come in on a good note after winning four of their last five games. This will be a tough game for us as each team has their share of injuries they are trying to overcome."
Nudo on being tied for first in the West: "Last week's win gives us a boost of confidence especially since we overcame so many mistakes. We beat a good team in Nashville and Las Vegas beat a good team in Philadelphia. San Jose looks like they are back to their ways, so I think our division is starting to come around. People shouldn't count this division out."

In addition to owning every Rattler passing record, he is steadily working his way up the league charts. Currently, Bonner ranks in the top four in four different all-time passing stats with 34,288 passing yards (No. 4 on the AFL career chart), 685 touchdowns (No. 4), 4,442 pass attempts (No. 4), and 2,744 completions (No. 4). SCORING MACHINE: WR/DB Randy Gatewood scored a touchdown in 13 of his 16 games last season. He has scored touchdowns in five of six games this season and has a total of 175 touchdowns in his career as a Rattler.
PLAYERS TO WATCH THIS WEEK:
Orlando FB/LB Marlon Moye-Moore: Moye-Moore is the leading rusher for the league's top rushing team. Last week against Los Angeles, he gained 17 of Orlando's 83 team rushing yards on five carries, including two touchdowns. As the top-rushing team gets ready to face the Rattlers, who are ranked last in stopping the ground attack, expect the Predators to not only look to Moye-Moore in short yardage situations but also on first and second downs.
Arizona WR/DB Talib Wise: Wise saw his most action of the year in last week's win against the Kats. In the victory, he recorded three catches for 34 yards and a touchdown. Wise was also a major player on defense, as he was the team's leading tackler with six and half stops. It seems as if the two-way rookie is beginning to find his rhythm with the increased playing time. With Clarence Lawson still on injured reserve the Rattlers will need Wise to contribute in the backfield even more. Offensively, the former college standout running back looks to help compliment Groce and Gatewood as well.
LAST GAME:
RATTLERS BEAT KATS, 51-49
Phoenix, Ariz. (March 4, 2006) - In a game that saw seven turnovers and three fourth-quarter lead changes, the Arizona Rattlers (2-4) won a hard-fought battle over the Nashville Kats (4-2), 51-49, in front of 9,099 at US Airways Center. Rattler offensive specialist Damien Groce caught the game-winning touchdown with 11 seconds left.
"It took a lot of heart tonight," said Groce. "We overcame a lot of mistakes and a lot of penalties to keep us in the game."
The winning touchdown was set up after a pass interference penalty on Nashville defensive specialist Khalil Carter on a fourth-and-goal with 15 seconds left.
Quarterback Sherdrick Bonner overcame three interceptions to finish the game 27-of-48 for 309 yards and seven touchdowns.
The Rattlers started the contest with their best half of the season, scoring 31 points, including four touchdown passes by Bonner. Their defense complimented the effort, with three consecutive interceptions to end the second quarter.
The last two were picked off by wide receiver defensive back Randy Gatewood, who earned "Ironman of the Game" honors with eight catches for 88 yards and two touchdowns along with the two interceptions.
"It was one of those nights where we got out of the gates quick," said Gatewood. "We overcame a lot of adversity to get the victory."
The tide turned on Arizona to start the second half, as the Kats scored three touchdowns in just over four minutes. One of the scores was a 22-yard interception return by Nashville linebacker Jermaine Lewis, and the second was set up after Kat defensive specialist Monty Montgomery intercepted a Bonner pass in the endzone. That turnover led to a 36-yard touchdown to offensive specialist T.T. Toliver, giving the Kats their first lead of the game, 35-31.
Toliver earned "Offensive Player of the Game" honors with eight catches for 132 yards and four touchdowns.
The Rattlers grabbed the lead back on the next possession after Groce pulled his second touchdown of the game with just over five minutes to go in the third quarter to make it 38-35.
The teams traded touchdowns as Toliver caught his fourth score of the game to give Nashville a 49-45 lead with just over a minute left.
The Kats had one last chance to take away the victory, but kicker Tony Dodson's 52-yard attempt sailed wide left as time expired. Arizona defensive specialist Joe Todd recovered the miss in the endzone to seal the Rattler victory.
Nashville, who came into the game as one of the league's best defensive teams while leading the league with 14 sacks, were held without one for the first time this season.
"They are known for being a very physical team, but we matched them tonight." said head coach Gene Nudo. "We now have to fight to be consistent."
The win puts Arizona in a first-place tie in the Western Division with Utah and San Jose, as they are each 2-3.
"It doesn't matter what happens with the other teams," said Nudo. "If we take care of ourselves, good things will come."

LAST MEETING WITH ORLANDO
PREDATORS HOLD OFF RATTLERS, 51-40
Phoenix, Ariz. (February, 3 2005) -- After jumping out to an early 13-0 lead, the Orlando Predators withstood a furious Arizona comeback attempt to escape the America West Arena 51-40. Offensive Player of the Game Joe Hamilton threw for 260 yards and five touchdowns to help lead Orlando to a 2-0 record. Rattlers QB Joe Germaine, subbing for the injured Sherdrick Bonner, struggled early in his first career start, but finished strong, ending with 236 yards and three TDs.
Orlando started the game off quickly, as Hamilton found Cory Fleming for a 34-yard score just three plays in. Fleming kept the Preds rolling, picking off Germaine on the Rattlers first possession. That would lead to a Hamilton to Travis McGriff scoring strike, and a 13-0 Orlando lead. Arizona came storming back, as Bo Kelly rumbled 12 yards for a touchdown that cut the lead to 13-7. But Orlando marched to three straight touchdowns, aided by a Rattler fumble and turnover on downs, and threatened to blow the Rattlers out leading 32-7.
Arizona wouldn't quit, scoring twice before half to cut the lead to 32-20 at the break. Orlando started the scoring again in the second half after Arizona missed a field goal, as Hamilton kept it himself for a four-yard TD run and a 39-20 lead. Arizona answered right back, as Bo Kelly rushed for his second score of the game to cut the lead to 39-27.
The Rattlers appeared poised to pull off a huge comeback, when a pressured Hamilton threw a pass right into the outstretched arms of rookie Wilson Thomas, who scampered 20 yards for the score. That brought the Rattlers to within five, but they would get no closer.
A failed on-side kick attempt gave Orlando the ball in Rattler territory, and Hamilton would take advantage, finding Fleming for another touchdown. Another missed field goal by the Rattlers led to an Idris Price 6-yard run and a 51-34 lead with just under four minutes to go. Germaine would find Siaha Burley on a 32-yard strike, but Orlando recovered the on-side kick and ran out the clock for the victory.
Hamilton finished 22-35 for 260 yards, five TDs and two interceptions. Germaine ended his first start 15-34 for 236 yards, three scores and two picks. Cory Fleming hauled in six catches for 92 yards and three scores, and added an interception. Siaha Burley had nine receptions for 141 yards and two scores in a losing effort.

RECENT NEWS:
GATEWOOD NAMED "IRONMAN OF THE WEEK"
Phoenix, Ariz. (March, 7 2006) -- Rattler wide receiver/defensive back Randy Gatewood has been named "Ironman of the Week" by the Arena Football League.
Gatewood (6-0, 185 pounds), who is in his 11th season in the AFL, made an impact on both sides of the ball during the Rattlers 51-49 win against the Nashville Kats on Saturday night. Offensively, he caught 8 passes for 88 yards and two touchdowns. On defense, he recorded three and a half tackles, two interceptions and a pass break up.
"It's good to have a game like this, but more importantly to get back on the winning track," Gatewood said.
The 2003 "Ironman of the Year" is Arizona's second-leading receiver this season with 27 catches for 327 yards and six touchdowns.
This is the second time this year that the Rattlers have had and AFL weekly award winner. In Week 4 offensive specialist Damien Groce earned "Offensive Player of the Week" honors.
