AFL announces players of the week

NEW YORK - Arizona Rattlers WR/DB RANDY GATEWOOD, Columbus Destroyers OS CARL BOND and Dallas Desperados OL/DL COLSTON WEATHERINGTON have been named Ironman, Offensive Player and ADT Defensive Player of the Week, respectively, for Week 6 of the 2006 season.

IRONMAN: Gatewood (6-0, 185, UNLV), who is in his 11th AFL season, helped propel the Rattlers (2-4) to a 51-49 win over Nashville (4-2) on Saturday night in Phoenix. He recorded eight receptions for 88 yards and two touchdowns and added 3.5 tackles, two interceptions and one pass break-up on defense. Gatewood, who was voted AFL Ironman of the Year in 1993, scored a key fourth-quarter touchdown that gave the Rattlers a three-point lead with just over five minutes to go in the game.

OFFENSIVE: Bond (5-11, 205, Connecticut), who is in his fifth AFL season, had a career-high and AFL Week 6 best 190 yards receiving and three touchdowns on nine receptions. Making the most of crunch time, Bond had 142 of those yards and all three touchdowns, including the eventual game-winning score, in the second half of Columbus' 65-54 win at New York on Friday night.

ADT DEFENSIVE: Weatherington (6-5, 275, Central Missouri State), who is in his third AFL season, registered 2.5 tackles-for-loss (9 YDS), two forced fumbles and 2.0 sacks in the Desperados 59-42 win at Chicago on Sunday afternoon. One fumble came after a sack and was knocked through the back of the endzone for a safety.

Ironman of the Week candidates included: Colorado's Willis Marshall, Columbus' B.J. Barre, Las Vegas' Joe Douglass, Orlando's Jerrian James and San Jose's James Roe.

Offensive Player of the Week candidates included: Colorado's John Dutton and Damian Harrell, Dallas' Clint Dolezel, Georgia's Matt Nagy, Grand Rapids' Anthony Hines, Tampa Bay's Bobby Sippio.

ADT Defensive Player of the Week candidates included: Colorado's Hugh Hunter, Columbus' B.J. Barre, Orlando's Jeroid Johnson and San Jose's Clevan Thomas.
