DESTROYERS Last Week:
Columbus Destroyers 65
New York Dragons 54
UNIONDALE, N.Y. - The name is Bond. Carl Bond.

The Columbus Destroyers offensive specialist caught nine passes for 190 yards and three scores to take home Offensive Player of the Game honors as he helped the Destroyers knock off the New York Dragons 65-54 in front of 10,173 fans at Nassau Coliseum Friday night.

The Destroyers defense stepped up big again, forcing five turnovers to help the team overcome an early 14-3 deficit to win for the second consecutive week and earn their first road and Eastern Division win of the season.

With the score tied at 45-45, Destroyers defensive specialist Jerald Brown picked off a Juston Wood pass at the Destroyers 16-yard line. It was his third straight game that Brown picked off a pass.

Three plays later, quarterback John Kaleo scooted in from 1-yard out to give the Destroyers their first lead of the game. The extra point was blocked and returned by Dragons' wide receiver/defensive back DeShane Dennis to put the score at 51-47 in favor of the Destroyers.

Wood gave the Dragons a 54-51 lead after a 2-yard touchdown run with 3 minutes, 11 seconds remaining. But the lead was short lived as the Destroyers scored on the ensuing play when Kaleo found Bond from 30-yards out to regain the lead at 58-54.

Defensive Player of the Game and Destroyers wide receiver/defensive back B.J. Barre snagged his second interception of the game to set up a fullback/linebacker Harold Wells 3-yard touchdown run to push the lead to 65-54. Defensive specialist Brandon Hefflin sealed the victory with the Destroyers fourth interception of the night on the Dragons ensuing possession.

The Dragons got on the board first when the rookie Wood, who was making his first career Arena Football League start, rushed over center from 1-yard out. Wood was starting in place of Aaron Garcia, who broke his right tibia in last weekend's game against Orlando. He would help the Dragons jump out to a 31-17 halftime lead.

The Destroyers tied things up after Barre intercepted a Wood pass at the Destroyers 5-yard line. Kaleo found Bond again, this time from 18 yards out.

Rookie fullback/linebacker Harold Wells, who played the majority of the second half in place of Thompson, scored on a run from 7 yards out to tie it at 45-45 to set up the final push.
THIS WEEK's OPPONENT:

The Georgia Force entered the Arena Football League in 2002 after the Arena Football League Board of Directors approved the purchase and relocation of the Nashville Kats to Atlanta.

Since playing their first game on Apr. 20, 2002, the team has been competitive year in and year out, qualifying for the playoffs twice. Under the leadership of Doug Plank in 2005, the Force qualified for the playoffs and lost on the final play of ArenaBowl XIX.

In it's fifth season of play in Georgia, the Force have an overall record of 35-33 with a home record of 19-16 and are 16-17 on the road.

Georgia is led by quarterback Matt Nagy, who is among the League-leaders in passing. On the season, Nagy has completed 136-of-203 passes for 1,611 yards and 28 touchdowns, while only throwing six interceptions. On the receiving end of most of Nagy's passes is Derek Lee. In six games this season, Lee has caught 54 passes for 538 yards and 11 touchdowns.

On the defensive side of things, Chris Brown leads the team in a majority of the statistical categories. He leads the team in tackles with 48 (44UT-8AT), interceptions with four and has seven pass breakups and a forced fumble to his credit.

LAST MEETING WITH GEORGIA:

ATLANTA - The Columbus Destroyers and Georgia Force were in a nip and tuck battle for four quarters, but the Force was too much, hanging on 55-48 in front of 14,104 fans at Philips Arena.

The teams were knotted up at 14-14 after the first quarter of play. The second quarter saw the Force jump ahead 28-21 with 8 minutes, 10 seconds to go in the half. The Destroyers scored with 3:06 left to cut the lead to 28-21 at the half.

Georgia maintained its hold the remainder of the game, as the Destroyers could not pull within a touchdown until the end of the game.

Georgia offensive specialist Troy Bergeron led all receivers with 10 receptions for 169 yards and four touchdowns. Quarterback Matt Nagy completed 24-of-37 passes for 275 yards and six touchdowns.

Columbus quarterback Matt D'Orazio completed 28-of-33 passes for 273 yards and four touchdowns and no interceptions. He also rushed for a touchdown, as well.

DESTROYERS NOTABLES:

DROP BACK
Despite trailing 31-17 at halftime, the Columbus Destroyers scored 48 second half points en route to a 65-54 road victory over Eastern Division rival New York on Friday night. A crowd of 10,173 fans at Nassau Coliseum saw Destroyers offensive specialist Carl Bond haul in nine passes for 190 yards and three touchdowns to lead Columbus. The defense stepped up big again, forcing the Dragons into five turnovers (four interceptions and a fumble recovery). Wide receiver/defensive back B.J. Barre had two key interceptions, including his second, which set up the Destroyers final score. Barre was second on the team in tackles with 7.5 (6UT-1AT), as well as adding a tackle for loss.

FORWARD MOTION
The Destroyers will host their second of back-to-back home games when they welcome Eastern Division rival Philadelphia Soul to Huntington Field at Nationwide Arena. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. The Soul has started off the season with a 3-3 record after falling 67-49 to the Las Vegas Gladiators Sunday night. The Destroyers and Soul have met four times with the Soul holding a 3-1 edge. The teams split the 2005 meetings with the road team winning both games.

HEAD COACHES
DOUG KAY: The Destroyers hired Doug Kay as head coach on July 14, 2005. Kay is in his first season in Columbus and brings 12 years of Arena Football coaching experience. In 10 of his 12 seasons, Kay's teams have qualified for the playoffs, including two ArenaBowl championships. Kay also has coached the Charlotte Rage (1995) and the Carolina Cobras (2000-01).

DOUG PLANK: In his second season as head coach of the Force, Doug Plank set some high standards for Force football in his first season in 2005. Last year, Plank guided the Force to an 11-5 regular season record, which was good enough to earn National Conference Southern Division championship honors. He then proceeded to march the Force through the playoffs and to their first ArenaBowl appearance. Plank came within a last second field goal of winning the ArenaBowl XIX title. It was the fourth straight season that he coached in the ArenaBowl. The previous three seasons, Plank was the defensive coordinator for the Arizona Rattlers. Plank is a familiar face to the Columbus area, as he played for legendary coach Woody Hayes at The Ohio State University.
WHAT CAN BROWN DO FOR YOU?, PART 3
Destroyers defensive specialist Jerald Brown continues to deliver for the team. For the third straight week, Brown had an interception, his fifth of the season. It came in a critical part of the Destroyers come from behind 65-54 victory over New York. With the scored tied 45-45 and 10 minutes, 6 seconds remaining in the game, Brown intercepted a Juston Wood pass at the Destroyers 16-yard line. Three plays later, the Destroyers were in the end zone and leading for the first time in the game. It was one of four Destroyers interceptions on the night. Brown ranks third in the Arena Football League in interceptions and is one behind League-leaders Monty Montgomery (Nashville) and Damon Mason (Austin). Brown's 108 interception return yards ranks second in the League behind New York's Dahnel Singfield, who leads the League with 125 interception return yards.

BIG TURNOVERS RESULT IN A TURNAROUND
The Destroyers defense is making a name for itself around the Arena Football League. The team has forced 13 turnovers in the past four games, including five this past weekend against the New York Dragons. Forcing turnovers is always a big part of a game, but all five turnovers forced against New York came in a timely manner. All five turnovers came in the second half and three set up touchdowns on the ensuing possession to help the Destroyers overcome a 31-17 halftime deficit. On the season, the Destroyers have forced 17 turnovers, good enough for second-best in the League. Nashville leads all teams with 20. The Destroyers are plus-3 in turnover margin, as well, ranking third-best.

RUN, ROOKIE, RUN
Columbus Destroyers fullback/linebacker Harold Wells is having a fine rookie season in the Arena Football League. The Gardner-Webb product had his best game of the season, to date, this past weekend against the Dragons. Wells helped guide the Destroyers to victory with a pair of touchdown runs, while leading the team in rushing with seven carries for 16 yards. Wells also had an assisted sack and tackle for loss on defense. Not to mention that Wells played almost the entire second half after starting fullback/linebacker Leroy Thompson injured his shoulder in the first half. On the season, Wells has played in four games and is second on the team in rushing, behind Thompson, with 12 rushes for 37 yards and three touchdowns. On defense, he has 3.5 tackles, including an assisted tackle and tackle for loss.

CALL IT A TRIFECTA, IN A BIG WAY
The Columbus Destroyers will welcome their 300,000th fan through the doors Friday night. Through 19 home games in two-plus seasons of play, the Destroyers have welcomed 288,957 fans, leaving them 11,043 fans shy of the 300,000 mark. As a franchise, the Destroyers also will welcome their 600,000th fan in franchise history the same day. Since the teams inception in 1999, the team has seen 589,825 fans come through the doors.
STILL PERFECT
Destroyers kicker Mark Lewis is perfect. At least he is Mr. Automatic when it comes to extra points. Lewis was acquired via trade with Arizona right before the start of the 2006 season, and the move has more than paid off. Lewis has yet to miss an extra point this season, but has missed the past three games due to an injury to his kicking foot. There is a possibility that he could return tonight against the Force, but will be a game time decision. He is tied for fourth in the Arena Football League in field goal percentage. He is the only player in the AFL who remains perfect on extra points. Emergency kicker Danny Kight, a journeyman kicker, has filled in nicely in both games. Kight only has missed two extra points, both of which were blocked and is 15-for-17 in the three games he has played in. As a team, the Destroyers are a combined 29-of-31 on extra points. The percentage of .935 is third-best in the League, behind Orlando and Dallas.

FITS LIKE A BARRE
Destroyers rookie wide receiver/defensive back B.J. Barre has an interesting path to the Arena Football League. After playing two seasons in the arenafootball2 league, one each for the Oklahoma City Yard Dawgz (2005) and Tulsa Talons (2004), Barre signed as a free agent on Oct. 7, 2005. After Training Camp, Barre was waived and signed to the Practice Squad. It did not take Barre long to be promoted to the Active Roster, as he was brought up on Feb. 10, 2006. Each week since joining the Active Roster, Barre has gotten better and better, including his best game to date this past Friday at New York. Barre had two key interceptions in the second half of the Destroyers' 65-54 victory. His first interception helped set up a Destroyers touchdown that gave them their first lead of the game. The second interception came with 54 seconds remaining in the game to set up another Destroyers touchdown, this one to ice the game. For the game, Barre caught two passes for 29 yards and a touchdown, while returning two kickoffs for 70 yards. He was second on the team in tackles with 6.5 (6UT-1AT) and had a tackle for a loss. He totaled 118 all-purpose yards as well.

BIG RETURN ON INVESTMENT
The Columbus Destroyers continue to dominate on kickoff returns. Through six games this season, the Destroyers have been in the Top 5 in all kickoff return categories. The Destroyers have returned 34 kickoffs for a total of 730 yards. The 730 yards is an Arena Football League best, while their average of 21.5 is second to Austin, who leads the League with a 22.0 average. The team has come awfully close each week in returning a kickoff for a touchdown, but are still awaiting their first kickoff return for a touchdown. Seven of the League's 18 teams have returned a kickoff for a touchdown this season. Wide receiver/defensive back Lincoln Dupree leads the team with 21 returns for 438 yards for an average of 20.9 yards per return.
OFFENSIVE BOND
Recently acquired Destroyers offensive specialist Carl Bond has made an immediate impact on the team, and continued that trend this past weekend. Bond, acquired on Feb. 17, when he signed as a Free Agent, has quickly jumped into the No. 2 slot on the Destroyers in receiving. Bond had a career game this past weekend against the Dragons, as he set career highs in receiving yards with 190 and touchdowns with three. His total offensive production came on just nine receptions. Of the 190 receiving yards and three touchdowns, 142 and all three scores came in the second half of the game. That performance was good enough to earn the Arena Football League's Offensive Player of the Week award for Week 6. In just three games, Bond only is 10 receptions and 30 yards behind Thabiti Davis for the team lead in receiving. He is tied for the team lead in receiving touchdowns with six.

THABITI = TO BEAT YOU
Destroyers wide receiver/linebacker Thabiti Davis stands a mere 6-foot-3 and weighs in at 215 pounds, which equates to one very large target. Quarterbacks John Kaleo and Billy Dicken have taken a liking to the massive Davis as he leads the team in receiving. Davis has caught 31 passes for 368 yards and six touchdowns. Davis has even been a force on the defensive side of the ball. In the matter of minutes Friday against the Dragons, Davis hauled in a 2-yard touchdown pass from quarterback John Kaleo. On the ensuing kickoff, Davis forced a fumble of Dragons return man DaShane Dennis, which he recovered. Davis started as the team's offensive specialist and moved to wide receiver/linebacker in Week 3. On the season, he has accrued a team-best 31 receptions for 368 yards and three touchdowns. On the defensive side of things, Davis has recorded 6.5 tackles (4UT-5AT), two tackles for a loss, forced two fumbles and recovered one.

FUMBLE RECOVERIES LEAD TO TOUCHDOWNS
The Columbus Destroyers defense is not all about forcing turnovers. The defense also looks to score off of the forced turnover. The team leads the League in fumble recoveries returned for touchdowns. On the season, the Destroyers have forced seven fumbles and recovered and returned four of them for touchdowns. Grand Rapids, Georgia and Philadelphia all are second with three fumble returns for a touchdown.

FAMILIAR FACES
Another familiar face will be in the house tonight when Georgia head coach Doug Plank returns to Columbus. Plank played for legendary Ohio State Buckeyes coach Woody Hayes from 1973-75. He played in three consecutive Rose Bowls for the Buckeyes. Tonight's game will mark the first time this season that the Destroyers have not faced off against a former member of the Buffalo or Columbus Destroyers previous seven teams.
