Niagara IceDogs News Release
Darren Archibald's overtime goal boosted the Niagara IceDogs to a 4-3 victory over the division rival Brampton Battalion Thursday night at the Gatorade Garden City Complex.
Freddie Hamilton, Jason Wilson and Andrew Agozzino also scored for the 'Dogs, while Dougie Hamilton recorded an assist for his 54th point of the season; a new IceDogs franchise record for points scored by a defenseman.
The Battalion opened the scoring at the 6:40 mark of the first on a power play as Michael Santini beat Mark Visentin top-corner on his glove side while on a breakaway, giving Brampton the early 1-0 lead.
Immediately after the goal, Victor Terreri challenged fellow enforcer Alex O'Neil to a fight right off of an offensive zone face off in efforts to get the fans and bench motivated. The two players exchanged several hard punches, but Terreri landed more to earn himself the narrow win.
At the 17:43 mark of the frame, the emotional and physical tones continued as Battalion captain Stephon Thorne challenged Alex Friesen to a scrap in front of the IceDogs bench. Friesen obliged, and the two both threw some heavy bombs before calling it a period and heading to the dressing rooms.
The action wouldn't end there as Jason Wilson potted his 17th of the year by backhanding home a Mitchell Theoret rebound with just 7 seconds left to give the 'Dogs their first lead of the game as the two teams headed into the dressing rooms for the first intermission.
In the second period the action dimmed down a bit, but Brampton still managed to tie the game as Zach Bell blasted a shot past Visentin with the help of Toronto Maple Leafs draft pick Sam Carrick, giving the game an even 2-2 score after 40 minutes.
IceDogs captain Andrew Agozzino set the tone for his team early in the third as he made a solid effort to break into the high slot and snipe a perfect shot to beat Cody St. Jacques top-shelf and regain the Niagara lead, 3-2. Friesen and David Pacan picked up the assists on the play.
At the 7:26 mark of the frame, Philip Lane continued his recent success against the IceDogs as he beat Visentin to tie the game once again - this time with a 3-3 score. Lane also scored two goals in Brampton's 3-0 win over the 'Dogs on Feb. 27.
Both teams battled hard for a goal throughout the remainder of the third, but both goaltenders stood on their heads and the game was forced into overtime. Shots were 46-33 in favour of Niagara after three periods of play.
After some back-and-forth excitement to start the overtime period, Steven Shipley made a beautiful pass to set up Darren Archibald, who made no mistake in shooting the puck into the net to boost the IceDogs to a 4-3 OT victory over the Battalion.
The IceDogs will finish the weekend with two tough games as they face the East Division's first place Ottawa 67's tomorrow at 7:30 p.m., before paying a visit to the Kingston Frontenacs on Sunday, Mar. 13 at 2 p.m.
Fans can catch both games on TVCogeco, The OHL Action Pack and 105.1 The River.
