Everett AquaSox News Release
EVERETT, Wash.- The Everett AquaSox (36-33) let another lead slip away but roared right back in the bottom of the seventh to beat the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes (43-26) 6-4 on Sunday afternoon.
Ryan Cavan led off the game by drawing a walk, before Joel Weeks sent him to third with a single. Drew Biery then hit a broken bat single to drive in Cavan and put runners at first and second with no outs. With one out, Weeks was forced out at second as Biery went to third on a Brooks Lindsley fielder's choice. Biery was then thrown out at home on a double steal attempt to minimize the Volcanoes damage and keep the score at 1-0.
Matt Cerione provided fireworks in the bottom of the first as he swung at the first pitch he saw and drilled it deep to center field for a lead off homer. Jose Rivero followed by drawing a walk, before Mario Martinez singled to right to continue the rally. With Gerardo Avila batting, Rivero caught Gloor off guard and stole third while the Volcanoes starter still had the ball. Gloor then made an errant throw to third, allowing Rivero to score and Martinez to move up to second on the play. With one out, Welington Dotel hit a long single off the right-center field wall to send Martinez to third. Ben Billingsley bounced in to a 5-4-3 double play to end the inning, but not before the Frogs took a 2-1 lead.
The Everett offense stayed hot as Blake Trinkler hit a one-out triple. Anthony Phillips followed by driving Trinkler in with a sac fly to extend the AquaSox lead to 3-1.
The Volcanoes took the lead in the top half of the seventh. Jose Medina led off with a double, before Caleb Curry reached on a fielding error with two outs - scoring Medina. After Curry stole second, Cavan drove him in with a single. Joel Weeks followed with a single to score Cavan, giving Salem-Keizer a 4-3 lead.
The AquaSox would take the lead for good in the bottom of the seventh. Billingsley led off with a single before Anthony Phillips reached on an error by the shortstop Cavan. After a Cerione walk to load the bases, Rivero brought everyone home with a triple to give the AquaSox a 6-4 lead.
Fray Martinez (S, 1) closed the door on the Volcanoes in the ninth to pick up the save and secure the victory for the AquaSox.
The AquaSox and Volcanoes will return Monday night for the series finale. Taylor Stanton will get the start for Everett. Stanton will be opposed by Salem-Keizer's Kyle Vazquez.. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m.
