LAST TIME OUT: The Down East Wood Ducks scored four runs in the fourth and three more in the eighth on their way to a 7-1 victory over the Carolina Mudcats to earn a split in the four game series. Diosbel Arias doubled and drove in three runs, while Ryan Dorow hit the team's first home run of the season, a two run shot.
ARIAS ABOARD: Diosbel Arias doubled home two runs and walked in yesterday's victory over Carolina. Arias has now reached base in all four games this season, with four hits and four walks. His on-base percent-age sits at .500 which is tied for sixth in the Carolina League. Last year Arias finished the season with an OBP of .451 at Low-A Spokane which led the Northwest League.
D-TRAIN DOMINATES: In his first appearance in the Carolina League, Saturday, Demarcus Evans picked up right where he left off a season ago. Evans struck out the side in the ninth, all swinging strikeouts. He threw 12 pitches, 3 balls, 3 called strikes and 6 swinging strikes in the frame. Last season he led all MiLB relievers (min. 50 IP) with a SO/9 of 16.88.
TAVERAS' TERRIFIC START: Leody Taveras opened the season by going 4-4, with a double, a triple, and four runs driven in. The four hits are a career-high, while the four RBIs match a career-best. He has also tallied a hit each day since, and ranks T-1st in the league in AVG (.563), second in OPS (1.313), and T-2nd in SLG (.750).
STRIKEOUTS: The Wood Ducks struck out 13 times in the ballgame yesterday and now lead the league, going down on strikes 53 times this season. Last year the Mudcats set a Carolina League record with 1,311 strikeouts in a season. The Woodies are on pace for 1,855.
LEATHERMEN: The Wood Ducks have been excellent in the field so far this season, committing just one error in 150 total chances this season, good for a league-best .993 fielding percentage.
SWITCH IT UP: After leading the Rangers organization with 74 RBI last season, Anderson Tejeda returns to the Wood Ducks, but this time as a switch hitter. Signed by the Rangers in 2014, Tejeda hit from the left side of the plate exclusively for the first four season in pro ball.
SCOUTING THE BIRDS: Myrtle Beach began the season losing 3 of 4 at home to Lynchburg. They were out-hit 48-19 in the series, and outscored 23-10. The Pelicans are coming off a bad 2018 campaign at the plate where they recorded franchise lows in nine different offensive categories.
RAGS AT THE HELM: Corey Ragsdale takes over as skipper for the Wood Ducks in 2019. Ragsdale will remain the Rangers Minor League Field Coordinator, while assuming a managerial seat for the first time since 2015, when he led the Hickory Crawdads to a South Atlantic League Championship, the second of his career.
