North Little Rock, AR - RHP Anthony Shew, RHP Junior Fernandez and RHP Derian Gonzalez combined to shut out the Arkansas Travelers, 4-0, before 2,597 fans at Dickey-Stephens Park on Sunday evening. With consecutive wins to split the series, the Cardinals have won six of their last eight games.
The Cardinals (11-19, 44-56) swung in front with a pair of runs against RHP Ashton Goudeau (L, 0-1) in the top of the third. After back-to-back base hits from 2B Luke Dykstra and RF Lane Thomas opened the inning, CF Blake Drake brought in Dykstra with an RBI fielder's choice to short. One out later with Drake at third, 1B John Nogowski pulled a two-out RBI single to left, plating Drake and making it 2-0.
RHP Anthony Shew (W, 5-5) kept the two-run lead intact with six scoreless innings in his start, allowing just four hits and five walks while striking out five.
After Shew's sixth scoreless stanza, Springfield stretched the lead in the seventh. Goudeau retired the first batter of the frame for his 11th straight out, but DH Chris Chinea came up next and slugged a solo shot to left field, his 12th home run of the year, making it 3-0. One out later, 2B Luke Dykstra skied a double to left-center field, before scoring when a Thomas grounder got past SS Chris Mariscal, opening the Springfield lead to 4-0.
RHP Junior Fernandez kept Arkansas (16-12, 51-47) off the board through his two scoreless relief innings in the seventh and eighth. RHP Derian Gonzalez then slammed the door with a 1-2-3 ninth, closing the 4-0 shutout win for the Cardinals.
