Syracuse Crunch News Release
BIG THINGS COME IN SMALL PACKAGES: Goaltender Karl Goehring was at it again on Sunday night, recording his second consecutive shutout and fourth in his last five games, stopping all 26 Hamilton shots, en route to his fifth victory of the season. It is the second time this season Goehring has had back-to-back shutouts. Goehring has allowed only one goal in his last five games (0.20 goals against average and a ..993 save percentage (145 saves - 146 shots)). Goehring has allowed only one goal in his last 320:18 of play. Earlier this month he set a franchise record for consecutive shutout minutes, going 197:04 without allowing a goal (November 8 - 16), breaking J.F. Labbe's record of 192:40 set last season. Entering this week, Goehring leads all American Hockey League goaltenders with a 0.82 goals against average, a .971 save percentage and four shutouts. Goehring, the smallest player in the AHL at 5-7, 150 pounds, has appeared in a total of nine games for the Crunch this season with a 5-1-0 record. A native of Apple Valley, Minnesota, Goehring is the Crunch's all-time leader in goals against average (a minimum of 20 games played) with a career 2.04 mark. J.F. Labbe is second on the list with a career 2.46 goals against average. Columbus signed Goehring on May 7, 2001, following a heralded college career at North Dakota (WCHA) in which he lead his club to the National Championship in 1999-00.
ON THE VERGE: Left wing Mathieu Darche enters this week one point shy of becoming the first 'Columbus era' player to hit the century mark in points, after a two-point effort Saturday night in Albany. Darche (47g, 52a) also moved into a fifth place tie with Mark Wotton on the Crunch's all-time power plays goal list, scoring his 19th on Saturday night. He trails Rod Stevens by two points for tenth on the all-time points list, Brian Bonin by three goals for sixth on the all-time goals list and Brian Loney by four power play goals for fourth on the all-time power play goals list. Darche's next game winning goal will tie Reggie Savage for third all-time with eight apiece. A native of St. Laurent, Quebec, Darche has appeared in 16 games with Syracuse this season scoring a team-high nine goals.
PENALTY KILL LEADS THE WAY: One of the keys to the Crunch's recent success has been the strong play of their penalty kill unit. Syracuse has killed off 39-of-41 chances over the last seven games, helping the Crunch to a 5-1-1 mark during that stretch. Entering this week Syracuse is third in the AHL, with a 89.5% success rate (95-for-105). The Crunch are first on the road at 97.5% (39-for-40).
