Goehring Named Player of the Week
Published on November 25, 2002 under American Hockey League (AHL) News Release
SPRINGFIELD, MA ... The American Hockey League announced today that Syracuse Crunch goaltender Karl Goehring has been named the Sher-Wood AHL Player of the Week for the period ending Sunday, November 24, 2002. Last week, Goehring recorded two shutouts in as many outings to continue his torrid pace atop the AHL's goaltending leaderboard.
One of the smallest players in the American Hockey League (listed at 5-foot-8, 160 pounds) stood tall in the Syracuse net again last week, making 29 saves in a 2-0 win at Albany on Saturday night and 26 more in a 1-0 victory over Canadian Division-leading Hamilton on Sunday. Goehring has recorded four shutouts in his last five starts, and has stopped 152 of 153 shots faced (.993) in his last 16 periods of work.
In recognition of his achievement, Goehring will receive a Sher-Wood leather jacket, presented to him during an on-ice ceremony prior to an upcoming game. In addition, Sher-Wood will donate five travel bags to the Midstate Youth Hockey Association of Syracuse in Goehring's name.
A native of Apple Valley, Minn., the 24-year-old Goehring is 5-1-0 on the season with a minuscule 0.82 goals against average and a gaudy .971 save percentage. He has allowed just six goals in nearly 22 periods of action this season, stopping 198 of 204 opponent shots. Goehring, who still qualifies as an AHL rookie, was 5-6-3 in 15 appearances with Syracuse last season. He spent the previous four years at the University of North Dakota, earning All-American honors and leading the Fighting Sioux to the NCAA championship in 2000, before signing with Columbus in May 2001.
Other players nominated for Sher-Wood AHL Player of the Week include Binghamton goaltender Ray Emery, Bridgeport left wing Mike Souza, Cincinnati goaltender Jean-Francois Damphousse, Grand Rapids center Stacy Roest, Hamilton right wing Jason Ward, Hartford right wing Ken Gernander, Hershey center Charlie Stephens, Houston center Rickard Wallin, Manchester goaltender Cristobal Huet, Manitoba left wing Zenith Komarniski, Milwaukee center Greg Classen, Philadelphia right wing Mark Greig, Providence right wing Pat Leahy, Rochester defenseman Doug Janik, Saint John center Matt Lombardi, San Antonio goaltender Chris Mason, Utah center Jim Montgomery, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton right wing Tom Kostopoulos and Worcester goaltender Curtis Sanford.
