Montgomery Biscuits News Release
MONTGOMERY - It's starting to become routine for the Biscuits (16-10). For the second day in a row, and for the fourth time in the first twelve home games in 2010, Montgomery secured a victory in their final at-bat. This time, Cody Cipriano scored from third when pitcher Matt Peterson's pickoff-throw to first went to the sidewall, and the Biscuits bested the Suns (16-10) 2-1.
Jacksonville got on the board first for the second day in a row. Tim Torres led off the second inning with a double. After Ryan Curry sacrifice-bunted him over to third, Javier Guzman scored him with a sacrifice fly to center.
The Biscuits tied things up at 1-1 in the third. John Matulia doubled with one down and then scored on Chris De La Cruz's two-out double.
In the ninth, Cipriano led off with a triple off the top of the wall in left-center field. Peterson's throwing error came after Greg Sexton had walked and with Drew Anderson at the plate.
De La Cruz was the only Biscuit to record multiple hits, going 2-3.
Alex Cobb, Justin Garcia, and Paul Phillips (2-1) combined for 6.2 innings of scoreless relief, after Jake McGee was yanked with one out in the third. Garcia was particularly impressive, striking out a six and allowing just a hit and a walk in 3.1. The six strikeouts is the best mark for a Biscuits reliever this season.
Peterson (2-1) took the loss without recording an out in the ninth.
Montgomery has now won five consecutive games, and eight of nine. With today's win, they're now tied with the Suns for first in the South Division.
LH Alex Torres throws for the Biscuits on Thursday night against Southern League Pitcher of the Week, RH Alex Sanabia. Game time is 7:05.
