Mobile BayBears News Release
KODAK, Tenn. - It wasn't a lack of baserunners that kept the Tennessee Smokies from winning the first of a five-game series at Smokies Park, it wasn't even a lack of big hits, but the BayBears somehow managed to score a 2-1 victory on Wednesday night.
Tennessee (18-8) nabbed the lead early against Wes Roemer as Blake Lalli started the second with a double and advanced to third on a base hit by Robinson Chirinos. Matt Spencer's long fly ball to right was deep enough to score Lalli, giving the Smokies a 1-0 advantage.
Craig Muschko limited the BayBears (13-13) to just three hits in six innings, but he was flipped for a run in the top of the fifth. With two outs, Jake Elmore reached on a bunt single and stole second in front of Jake Wald. Wald hit a chopper to third that Ryan Flaherty deflected to shortstop Starlin Castro. Elmore never picked his head up as he barreled home and knocked over the catcher, Chirinos, in the process to tie the game.
Darting around rallies all night, Roemer lasted 5.1 innings while scattering eight hits. He walked a pair in the contest and also fanned two. He was lifted for Bryan Henry in the bottom of the sixth as Henry made it through another 1.2 innings to keep the game tied.
Wald started the eighth inning with a double against reliever Jake Muyco (1-1). He took third on a bunt attempt by Henry which Muyco took a gamble on but threw late to third. After Evan Frey was punched out by Ryan Buchter, Ollie Linton singled up the middle to put the BayBears on top.
Tennessee had a chance in the bottom of the eighth as Lalli doubled to start, but he was thrown out at home after a base hit by Chrinios to center. Two batters later, Chirinos was gunned down at the plate on a chopper to first off Tony Thomas's bat by Bryan Byrne. Abe Woody (S, 4) worked a perfect ninth to keep the Smokies down for good.
The BayBears continue their 10-game road trip on Thursday night as they battle the Smokies in a scheduled doubleheader which will start at 4:30. They return home to battle the Chattanooga Lookouts on Saturday, May 15 at 7:05 p.m. For tickets, which start at $5 for kids and $7 for adults, call (251) 479-BEAR or log on to www.mobilebaybears.com.
