Mississippi Braves News Release
Pearl, MS- In the first game of a five game series, the Mississippi Braves used 10 innings to defeat the Birmingham Barons, 7-6. The win ended a two game losing streak for the Braves, who are now a perfect 4-0 in extra inning games. The Barons are now 0-5 in extra frames. The decisions went into the bullpens, with Steve Mark improving to (4-0) and Jacob Rasner fell to (0-2).
Mississippi overcame their largest deficit of the season to win. The Barons to got the scoring started in the 1st inning by sending eight batters to the plate and scoring half of them. The first three batters of the game singled and loaded the bases. Brent Morel then hit a ground ball to shortstop, Randy Gress who committed an error to allow the first run to score. After turning a double play that brought home another run, the Barons received and RBI single from Tyler Kuhn to drive in yet another run. The Barons led 4-0 after a half inning.
The Barons came threw with a few more two innings later, when in the 3rd inning, Jim Gllagher and Brent Morel were both on base. A Christian Marrero sac fly would score Gallagher, and Morel came in on a single from Tyler Kuhn. This would be the last time Birmingham would score all day as they led 6-0.
The MBraves didn't threaten till the 5th inning but the 5th turned into a great inning for Mississippi. Donell Linares led off the inning with a double, but the next two batters were retired. With two outs and a runner at second, Conception Rodriguez singled in Linares to put Mississippi on the board. Randy Gress would then walk, which was followed by an RBI single from Alex Romero to make the score 6-2. Will Cabrera was the next batter and with two runners on, Cabrera nailed a home run over the left field wall to make it a 6-5 game. It was Cabrera's 2nd homer of the season.
The next inning, the Braves tied it up thanks to a double from Mauro Gomez and a single from Donell Linares. The Linares hit drove in Gomez to tie the game at 6 a piece. Linares finished the day going 3-5 with two RBI's.
The Braves bullpen limited Birmingham to just two hits after the 5th inning and kept the off of the scoreboard. After a close play at the plate to end the 9th, the two teams went into extra innings. Marek sat down the Barons in order in the 10 and gave his team a chance to win in the bottom of the 10th.
With one out, the Braves collected a single from Eric Duncan. The next batter struck out and the Braves had a runner at first with two outs. On a 3-2 pitch with the runner going, Donell Linares hit a fly ball down the left field line. It fell in and left fielder, Christian Marrero had a difficult time handling the ball. Eric Duncan was waved home and slid in feet first, just ahead of the tag from Jared Price to win the game, 7-6.Â
The Braves now lead the series 1-0 and remain perfect in extra inning games, (4-0). Tomorrow night, the Braves will send LHP Mike Minor (0-2; 3.92) to the mound to face RHP Matt Long (0-3; 7.71). First pitch will be a 7:05 at Trustmark Park.
