Another Crazy Eighth Leads Revs to Third Straight Win

A season-high Sunday crowd of 5,227 at Santander Stadium watched the York Revolution continue a successful holiday weekend homestand with a 7-4 victory over the Bridgeport Bluefish. The home team erased a 3-0 deficit after four and a half innings, with Andres Perez and Telvin Nash each blasting homers as York won their third consecutive game, and their fourth in five. They'll go for the four-game sweep of the 'Fish in a 5 p.m. Labor Day twi-night ballgame.

The Bluefish opened the scoring in the fourth, when C.J. Retherford's two-run line single to left scored Josh Prince (reached on error) and Wellington Dotel (double). The score was 3-0 Bridgeport an inning later when Wilson Batista led the inning with a double down the left field line, and scored when Luis Rodriguez smacked a gap double to left-center.

York responded in the fifth though, ginning up a two-out rally with a Wilson Valdez walk. A batter later Perez promptly homered to the left field alley, to cut the deficit to one. For Perez, it was his Revolution-leading 15th home run of 2015, and his 74 RBI lead not only his club, but the Atlantic League as well. The game was tied an inning later, after the Revs loaded the bases on a pair of singles by Salvador Paniagua and Nick Ferdinand, followed by a James Simmons hit-by-pitch. Paniagua eventually scored on a passed ball but the others were stranded, making it a 3-3 game after six.

The 'Fish pulled back ahead in the seventh, with four consecutive singles to begin the inning, as Jobduan Morales drove in a run with the bases loaded to make it 4-3. Revolution reliever Tony Pena came in to relieve starter Rommie Lewis at that point, and quickly worked out of the jam with a strikeout and induced a 1-2-3 double play with a nice snag on a comebacker to the mound, to retire the side and limit the damage to just a run.

Lewis wound up scattering 10 hits over six innings, and didn't walk anyone while collecting three strikeouts. Three of the four runs he allowed were earned. His counterpart David Anderson went five and a third, allowing nine hits and three runs, two of which were earned. Anderson walked two and struck out two.

In a homestand rife with Revolution homers, Nash delivered York's second of the game to lead off the home half of the eighth, a liner rocketed out to left-center. It was Nash's third consecutive game with a home run, and it tied the game once again, 4-4. The Revolution pulled ahead for good after a one-out single by Ferdinand, and he scored a batter later on a gap double by Simmons for a 5-4 lead. It was 6-4 a batter after that once Eric Patterson replaced Simmons at second with a RBI double of his own down the left field line, into the corner. Patterson scored too when he stole third, after the throw went high and wild into left. York scored all four of their runs in the eighth inning with one out or less to cap the scoring for the evening.

Luis Perdomo earned the win in relief for the Revolution, tossing a scoreless eighth inning. Mike DeMark nailed down his second save of the season in the ninth, stranding two with a pop out. DeMark lowered his ERA in 21 games and 20.1 innings with York this season to 0.88. Bridgeport reliever Steven Ames was tagged with the loss, after being responsible for all four eighth inning runs, in just a third of an inning pitched.

Notes: All three wins in the series have occurred in the Revs' final at-bat, as York improves to 22-11 in last at-bat decisions. The Revs have tied or taken the lead in the eighth inning in all three games. York ties a season-high at seven games over .500 with a 31-24 record in the second half, remaining within 4.5 games of Lancaster for first. Nash's three-game homer streak is within one of the team record of four (Chris Nowak-2012, Patterson-2013). The Revs have totaled eight homers in the first of three games of the series. York's bullpen has allowed no earned runs in 17.1 innings on the current homestand, and just one hit in 9.1 innings in the current series. Brandon Boggs went 3-for-3 with a walk, extending his hitting streak to six games. The comeback win is the third straight for the Revs and 29th overall this season. It is their second three-run comeback of the series, just one run short of matching their largest of the season. York lefty Frank Gailey (4-3, 2.47) will face Bridgeport southpaw Robert Carson (5-3, 2.97) in Monday's finale at 5 p.m. It is Star Wars Night at Santander Stadium, with tickets available at YorkRevolution.com, (717) 801-HITS, and in-person at the Apple Chevrolet Ticket Office.
