(Bridgeport, Conn. - September 6, 2015) - The Bridgeport Bluefish today announced the acquisition of infielder Juan Martinez in a trade with Amarillo of the independent American Association for a player to be named later. The Bluefish have also signed right-handed pitcher Freddy Flores.
"Juan and Freddy are joining this team at a really crucial point in the season," says Bluefish Manager Ricky VanAsselberg. "We are thrilled to welcome them both to Bridgeport and believe they will help us in our final push towards the post-season."
Juan returns to Bridgeport for the third year in a row during his seventh season of professional baseball and fifth in the Atlantic League. The infielder began the 2015 campaign with Amarillo of the independent American Association, where he appeared in 95 games and collected a .303 batting average with eight home runs, 60 RBI, 58 runs scored. The 28-year-old began his professional career in 2009 after being selected in the 46th round of the MLB draft by the San Francisco Giants. He spent two seasons with the Giants organization before joining the independent ranks in 2011 with Newark of the Can-Am League and York of the Atlantic League. In 2012, he again played with Newark as well as Camden of the Atlantic League, and in 2013 he split time with Camden and Bridgeport. Last year, he spent the entire season as a Bluefish, appearing in 128 games and collecting a .230 batting average with eight home runs, 37 RBI and 53 runs scored. In 625 career minor league games, Juan owns a .264 batting average with 46 homers, 262 RBI and 310 runs scored.
Freddy joins the Bluefish during his tenth season of professional baseball and first in the Atlantic League. The pitcher began the 2015 campaign with Amarillo of the independent American Association, where he appeared in 25 games (two starts), collecting a 6.17 ERA with 33 strikeouts in 42.1 innings pitched. The 41-year-old began is professional career in 1998 with Chillicothe of the independent Frontier League. Flores has spent his entire career within the independent ranks, including Richmond of the Frontier League, Atlantic City and Brockton of the Can-Am League, Abilene of the North American League, and El Paso of the American Association. In 136 career minor league games, Freddy owns a 32-25 record with a 4.60 ERA and 350 strikeouts in 536.1 innings of work.
