Sugar Land Space Cowboys News Release
SUGAR LAND, Texas - The Sugar Land Skeeters dropped their fourth-straight game to the Somerset Patriots, 9-3. The loss moves the Skeeters to 59-67 on the year.
Much like the last three nights, Somerset was able to claim an early lead on the Skeeters. In the top of the first, Jonny Tucker drew a walk off starter, Kelvin Villa to open the game. David Vidal deposited a one-out double down the left field line to move a pair in scoring position before a groundout to the right-side of the infield from Michael Burgess gave the Patriots a 1-0 lead.
The Skeeters would respond in the home half of the first to gain their first lead in the last 27 innings. Chris Wallace singled up the middle with one out and Delwyn Young extended his on-base streak to 22 games with a two-out single through the left-side of the infield. Johan Limonta rifled a double into the right-center alley to score a pair of runs and claim a 2-1 lead.
Somerset pushed across the equalizer in the top of the second after the Skeeters committed a pair of crucial errors that allowed the tying run to cross the plate. Mike Wilson reached to lead off the inning when Villa was unable to handle the ball off the mound. Greg Hopkins doubled to left to move a pair into scoring position. Villa almost worked out of the jam by inducing a popup to shortstop and a lineout to first, but on the lineout, Travis Scott made an errant throw back to second in an attempt to double-up Hopkins allowed a run to come home and tie the game.
The Patriots regained the lead in the top of the fourth after two more miscues by the Skeeters. Wilson doubled to left with one out and Hopkins singled into left to put runners on the corners. Adam Donachie worked a walk to load the bases before Villa threw a breaking ball in the dirt that bounded away from Wallace, allowing a run to score. Nate Spears reached on a single to score the second run and increase the lead to 4-2.
The bullpen of the Skeeters surrendered a grand slam in the top of the seventh as Hopkins picked up three-fourths of the cycle with the long ball to move the score to 8-2.
Denny Almonte launched his 10th-home run of the season with a solo shot in the bottom of the seventh, but the Skeeters were unable to manufacture any more runs, falling 9-3.
