Bakersfield Condors News Release
BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - Condors defenseman Andrew Oke has been invited as a ceremonial first-puck dropper for tonight's LA Kings game where he will be a special guest for model/actress Carmen Electra's Head to Hollywood Night. Head To Hollywood is a program designed to raise money for brain tumor survivors and their families.
The Head to Hollywood program provides comfort and an escape to survivors of cancerous and non- cancerous brain tumors. It gives them an all-access- pass inside a world usually reserved for celebrities, including attendance at Hollywood awards shows and parties, VIP access to television and movie sets, as well as celebrity spa and beauty treatments. As one of the many perks that Oke will receive today, he was picked up by a private jet at 9 a.m. this morning and was flown to Los Angeles for the game. Throughout the day he meet celebrities such as American Idol's Ryan Seacrest, Lauren Conrad, Tara Connor, Giuliana Depandi, and plenty of Miss USA Contestants.
US Weekly editor and former Condors player Ken Baker, a pituitary brain tumor survivor, founded the non-profit organization in 2005. Baker was a goaltender for the Condors during the 2001-02 season. Baker documented his time with the team and his health battles in the book, They Don't Play Hockey In Heaven, which is available at merchandise stands at all Condors home games or at the Condors team store.
Carmen Electra also got involved with the cause as she knew first-hand how much pain and difficulty can take place when a family member has a brain tumor. Electra's mother died of a malignant brain tumor in 1998.
"Riles (Condors President Matthew Riley) told me about Andrew's story and I reached out to him due to the obvious personal connections," said Baker. "He's been through a lot in the last couple of years and it will be great to give him a night of NHL hockey, Carmen Electra, and Miss USA contestants."
Starting at the Condors next home game this Saturday the Condors players have arranged to sell shirts to raise money for Oke's life after hockey. The shirts have a Condors logo on the front and his name and number on the back, along with his favorite saying before every game, "Let's do this." The shirts will be $20 each and proceeds will go to Oke as a gift from the Condors players.
The Condors face-off against the Phoenix RoadRunners for the second game of their two-game series Thursday, March 15 at 7:11 p.m. before finishing off the four-city, nine-game, 16-day road trip with a 7:30 p.m. contest in Long Beach on Friday, March 16.
The team returns to The Nest on March 17 for a game against the Stockton Thunder, as Bright House Networks, 101.5 KGFM and American Business Machines present SpongeBob Squarepants and the St. Patrick's Day Jersey Raffle and Auction.
SpongeBob will be live and in person to entertain the crowd, plus five lucky fans will win special game- worn St. Patrick's Day jerseys, with proceeds from the auction donated to Kern Adult Literacy Council.
