Waterloo Black Hawks News Release

Waterloo, Iowa - Just a little less than two years after his last appearance for the Waterloo Black Hawks, defenseman Mikey Anderson has signed a professional contract with the NHL's Los Angeles Kings.

The agreement was made Tuesday and officially brings the 2017 Los Angeles draft pick into the Kings' organization for three years.

Prior to the 2015/16 season, the Black Hawks signed Anderson to a tender agreement, reserving a spot for him on Waterloo's roster that winter at just age 16. Although he was the second-youngest player on the team, Anderson played in 57 of 60 games, producing a +6 plus/minus differential and 16 points (one goal, 15 assists). He added two more goals and an assist during the playoffs over eight games that spring, and was named to the USHL's All-Rookie Second Team.

Between the summer of 2016 and the end of the 2016/17 season, Anderson moved from a C-rated NHL Draft prospect to the 51st-ranked North American skater, according to NHL Central Scouting. In addition to delivering a +29 differential and 34 points (five goals, 29 assists), Anderson also helped the United States to a gold medal at the 2016 World Junior A Challenge. The Kings would go on to draft him in the fourth round with the 103rd overall pick.

Anderson has spent the last two seasons at the University of Minnesota-Duluth, winning back-to-back NCAA championships. During 79 college games over two seasons, the Roseville, Minnesota native accumulated 11 goals and 39 assists. Simultaneously, he represented the United States during both the 2018 and 2019 World Junior Championships, helping Team USA to bronze and silver medals respectively.

Anderson has the opportunity to become the third former Black Hawk to appear in a regular season game with the Kings. Jason Blake made his first appearance for L.A. in 1999, and this season, Cal Petersen debutted for the Kings after being drafted in 2013.
