Anderson Goes the Distance in 6-0 Victory over St. Cloud

Since coming out with a no-decision in his first start of the year, Brady Anderson, suffice it to say, has been dominant on the mound. Anderson was lights out again Wednesday evening against the Rox in a 6-0 complete game shutout for the Stingers second-straight win.

In his first start of the season, which also came against St. Cloud, Anderson gave up two runs in what eventually turned out to be a 5-4 loss. But after that first appearance, he has yet to give up another run, a scoreless streak that Anderson increased to 24 innings with his nine scoreless frames Wednesday at Joe Faber Field.

The game stayed in a scoreless lock for the first three innings, as Rox starter Nick Jensen-Clagg managed to keep the Stingers (16-5) off the scoreboard despite a bases loaded, no-out opportunity to start the first inning.

However, Willmar eventually broke through in the fourth inning against St. Cloud to tally three runs, which would wind up being the difference in the matchup of two of the top teams in the North Division. Casey Hughston kick started the rally with a leadoff single in the fourth against Jensen-Clagg, while David Parrett came up next with a single of his own. A fly ball to right field off the bat of Max Dutto advanced both runners 90 feet to second and third to set the stage for Brian Pruett. Pruett, who had two doubles in his last game at Joe Faber, doubled again to bring home Hughston and Parrett. Then with Alex Borglin at the plate, Pruett advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on Borglin's groundout to make it a 3-0 lead.

Anderson needed only the one run on the mound, though, as he surrendered just five hits throughout the game. The first he hit gave up came in the bottom of the fourth inning, but he worked out of the inning with little stress on a groundout and a strike out, one of five fanned batters in the game for Anderson.

With one out in the bottom of the fifth, the Rox (13-10) earned their best scoring chance of the night with back-to-back singles. But as was the case several times throughout the night, Anderson located his pitches and the defense did the rest behind him. St. Cloud's Harrison Wenson sent a grounder to third base that Borglin turned for a double play to end the inning.

The Rox got a hit apiece in the sixth and seventh innings, but Anderson worked out of both with three more groundball outs, one of which was another double play in the seventh. He had little trouble after the final hit against him in the seventh, and retired the last eight batters in the game.

For good measure the Stingers' offense tacked on two runs in the sixth inning using just one hit. Hughston again led off with a walk with Parrett following suit and both came into score again, Hughston off an RBI single by Borglin and Parrett on a fielder's choice grounder by Motl to make it a comfortable 5-0 margin.

An RBI double by Hughston in the ninth gave Anderson plenty of insurance heading to the bottom half, and he quickly shut down St. Cloud in order to secure the second complete game shutout of the season for the Stingers pitching staff, the most in the Northwoods League.

Hughston, Pruett and Reagan Fowler led Willmar with two hits apiece at the plate, while Pruett and Borglin had a pair of RBI to their names.

Anderson is now 3-0 this season and has picked up wins in his last three starts.
