Southern Maryland Blue Crabs News Release
Lancaster, PA - Southern Maryland pounded out a season-high 18 hits and jumped out to a 10-0 lead, en route to an easy 11-4 victory over the Lancaster Barnstormers on Monday afternoon at Clipper Magazine Stadium. The game was called after seven innings due to rain.
The Blue Crabs, again, jumped out to an early lead as they scored three in the first on an RBI single from designated hitter Brian Barton, and RBI doubles by first baseman Casey Benjamin and right fielder Ben Harrison to give Southern Maryland a 3-0 lead.
Southern Maryland added to their lead in the second inning as Barton roped a double into the right field corner to make the score 5-0. In the third, the Blue Crabs continued their offensive onslaught as leftfielder Richard Giannotti (2) smacked a two-run homer over the right-centerfield wall to give Southern Maryland a 6-0 lead.
Garcia then stepped to the plate in the fourth and hoisted a grand-slam homer over the leftfield wall to give the Blue Crabs a commanding 10-0 advantage. For Garcia, it was his second grand slam in seven days after hitting another one at home against the Road Warriors on August 29th.
Lancaster finally got on the board in the fourth on an RBI groundout from designated hitter Fernando Seguignol to cut the Southern Maryland lead to nine.
Though they did not score in the sixth, the Blue Crabs both tied and set their season-high in base-hits. With one out, a single by Giannotti was followed by another single from shortstop Tanner Townsend to set the new watershed mark with 18 hits.
The Barnstormers got a two-run dinger from the league's homerun leader, first baseman Tommy Everidge (27), in the sixth inning, before the Blue Crabs' Adam Godwin responded in the seventh with a solo homer of his own to make the score 11-3 Southern Maryland. It was Godwin's second homer of the season.
Lancaster would pick up a meaningless solo homer in the seventh from third baseman Travis Metcalf (6) to make the final 11-4.
It was at the end of the seventh inning that the umpires pulled all the players off the field. 30 minutes later, the game was officially called in the Blue Crabs' favor.
The Blue Crabs got three hits each from Godwin, Barton, Harrison, and Giannotti. Godwin scored twice and Barton went 3-4 with two doubles, two RBI and two runs scored. Harrison went 3-4 with two doubles, a RBI and a run scored, while Giannotti went 3-4 with a homer and two RBI.
Southern Maryland also got two hits from Townsend, Pinckney, and Garcia, with Garcia going 2-4 with a homer, double, five RBI and two runs scored.
The Barnstormers picked up only four hits for the game. After winning game one 9-0, Lancaster was outscored 20-5 and outhit 33-9 over the final two games of the series. Second baseman Gilberto Mejia led the way by going 2-3 and scoring two runs.
Getting the win for the Blue Crabs was Nick Green (10-6) who pitched all seven innings and allowed four runs on four hits. He also walked one and struck out three in picking up the complete game; the eighth of the year for Southern Maryland and the first for Green.
Starter J.D. Durbin (8-3) suffered the loss for Lancaster after allowing nine runs on 11 hits in 3.1 innings of work.
The Blue Crabs will head home and kick off a season-long 11-game home stand with a make-up doubleheader against the Camden Riversharks at Regency Furniture
Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 4:00. In game one, righty Virgil Vasquez (7-6, 4.45 ERA) will go for Southern Maryland with newcomer and fellow-righty David Trahan (0-0, 0.00 ERA) slated to go in game two. The starter for Camden have not been announced. Both games can be heard on www.somdbluecrabs.com.
