Amerks Wrap up Weekend with 5-1 Loss to Marlies
November 21, 2015 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Rochester Americans News Release
(Toronto, ON)... Phil Varone scored his team-leading seventh goal of the season, but it wasn't enough as the Rochester Americans came away on the short end of a 5-1 decision to the league-leading Toronto Marlies Saturday at Ricoh Coliseum.
Rochester captain Cal O'Reilly recorded the only assist on Varone's lone goal, giving the veteran forward three points in the last two games after a two-point effort in last night's win over Bridgeport. Andrey Makarov made his third straight start in net for the Amerks, stopping 31 of 35 shots in the loss.
T.J. Brennan (1+1), Richard Panik (1+1), Rinat Valiev (1+1) and Brendan Leipsic (0+2) each recorded two points in the win for Toronto, which also received goals from William Nylander and Matt Frattin. After earning the shutout against the Amerks on Wednesday in Rochester, Garret Sparks was back between the pipes tonight for the Marlies, finishing with 31 saves on 32 shots while also contributing a pair of assists.
Brennan spotted the Marlies to a 1-0 advantage late in the first period, handcuffing Makarov with a wrist shot to the upper corner of the net to finish off a 3-on-2 fast break. Leipsic, who scored the overtime game-winner in Wednesday's contest between the North Division rivals, earned the assist on Brennan's seventh of the season.
Toronto doubled its lead midway through the middle frame as Rochester fell victim to yet another unlucky bounce off the end boards for the second straight game. Brennan's initial shot from the point missed wide to the left of Makarov and the rebound kicked out just beyond the far post, where Nylander cashed in on the second opportunity for his team-leading ninth goal of the season.
The Marlies scored twice in the first 6:03 of the third period to widen the gap, beginning just 1:24 into the final frame when Panik broke through the Rochester defense and put a shot behind Makarov. Frattin then made it 4-0 in favor of the hosts less than five minutes later on the power-play after deflecting Leipsic's shot inside the left post as Toronto took its largest lead of the night.
The Amerks finally solved Sparks at 16:18 as Varone got the better of the Toronto netminder on a shorthanded breakaway, denying Sparks' bid of a second straight shutout. Valiev, however, would add an empty-netter from just beyond center ice with 59 seconds remaining to restore the Marlies' four-goal lead and put the finishing touches on the 5-1 Toronto victory.
The Amerks are back on home ice on Wednesday, Nov. 25 when they host the intrastate rival Syracuse Crunch in the annual pre-Thanksgiving Day matchup at The Blue Cross Arena. The 7:05 p.m. contest will be the second of 10 meetings between the two teams this season and will be carried live on FOX Sports 1280 Rochester. Rochester claimed the only other get-together this season with the Crunch courtesy of a 4-3 shootout win back on Oct. 25 to take a 1-0-0-0 lead in the season series while improving to 118-94-17 all-time against Syracuse.
