Amerks Two-Game Win Streak Snapped in 5-1 Loss to B-Sens
January 16, 2013 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Rochester Americans News Release
(Binghamton, NY)... The Rochester Americans' brief two-game winning streak came to an end after suffering a 5-1 loss at the hands of the Binghamton Senators Wednesday night at Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena. With the loss, the Amerks fall to 1-5-0-0 against the B-Sens this season having dropped two of the last three meetings between the intrastate rivals.
Corey Cowick (2+1) and Jean-Gabriel Pageau (0+3) led the hometown Senators each with three points apiece, while Stephane Da Costa provided a pair of goals and Nathan Lawson stopped 34 of 35 shots to earn his second straight win. Binghamton improves to 24-8-1-3 on the season and has claimed 11 out of a possible 12 points in the season series against Rochester.
Luke Adam potted the lone goal for the Amerks, extending his point streak to four games, and goaltender David Leggio, who was making his 10th straight start, finished with 33 saves in the losing effort.
Cowick opened the scoring 7:32 into the first period with a shorthanded goal to give the Senators a 1-0 lead. Nick Crawford's point shot missed wide of the net and circled back up the right wing boards to Pageau, who quickly sped out of the Rochester zone on the odd-man rush. Recognizing his passing lane was completely covered, Pageau elected to shoot, allowing Leggio to make the easy save, but the rebound caromed out to the low slot, where a trailing Cowick made good on the second opportunity. The goal was Binghamton's league-leading 10th shorthanded tally of the season.
Rochester evened things up at 14:50 on the power-play as Adam notched his seventh of the season, deflecting Crawford's shot from the point to make it a 1-1 game. Crawford shifted from his post at the high slot to the top of the right circle, sending a low shot through traffic. Lawson, despite being screened, went down to make the initial save, but Adam redirected it into the top right corner for the equalizer. With the goal, Adam extends his current point streak to four games and now shows five points (2+3) over that span. Brayden McNabb also picked up an assist on the play.
Binghamton regained the lead as Cowick struck again at 18:21 of the frame, scoring his second goal of the game that opened up a four-goal run for the Senators. Leggio denied Pageau's point-blank shot with his right pad, and then shut the door on former Amerk Hugh Jessiman seconds later. Cowick, however, capitalized on the third whack, tucking the loose puck inside the near post to put the B-Sens ahead 2-1.
Two quick goals within a span of 2:38 gave Binghamton a 4-1 advantage, beginning with Da Costa's first of the game and seventh of the season at 9:13 of the middle frame. Moments after his penalty expired, Da Costa, who joined the offensive rush as the trailing forward, swept in Pageau's rebound to the left of the cage. Minutes later, Jack Downing netted his first of the season when he beat his defender to a loose puck and flipped a well-placed shot under the crossbar to give the Sens a three-goal cushion at 11:51.
Da Costa added his second of the game at 14:33 after Mark Stone found him left all alone in front of the Rochester net for the easy tap-in, securing the 5-1 for Binghamton.
The Amerks open up a four-game homestand on Friday, Jan. 18 when they host the first-place Syracuse Crunch at The Blue Cross Arena. The 7:05 p.m. matchup will be broadcast live on Sports 1280 WHTK and will also be televised in Rochester and Buffalo on Time Warner Cable SportsChannel.
