Amerks Hit The Books For Fifth Straight Season
September 21, 2009 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Rochester Americans News Release
(Rochester, NY)... The Rochester Americans and the Monroe County Libraries are again partnering to provide the "Reading Power Play," which teams Amerk players with local public librarians in support of reading. The 2009-10 season marks the fifth year of the program and is brought to you by The College at Brockport, State University of New York.
"The Amerks are very proud to be a part of the fabric of Rochester and reaching out to the young people continues this tradition," said Amerks President Lewis Staats. "Our players recognize they are role models and we are happy to be involved in this reading program for both the learning and the thrill it brings to the youth of the city."
"The College at Brockport is proud to team up with the Rochester Americans to promote reading in Rochester," said David Mihalyov, executive director of public relations for the College. "It is so important to instill within children a love of reading and a hunger for learning."
The "Reading Power Play" allows fans to meet players and The Moose, while also learning about hockey and the importance of reading. The program also rewards kids for reading and selects two grand prize winners that will win dinner, suite tickets and the opportunity to participate in the ceremonial puck drop at an Amerks' game.
The Amerks will kick off the 2009-10 program on Wednesday, October 7th and begin their first of 21 reading appearances. The "Reading Power Play" involves players stopping by local libraries, reading to kids and giving a hockey demonstration. Each appearance also features a raffle for Amerk memorabilia and an autograph session by the visiting player and The Moose.
At each event, the Amerks will distribute ticket vouchers to each youth in attendance good for one complimentary ticket for any Amerks home game from November 20th to February 20th. The vouchers are courtesy of The College at Brockport. Additional tickets for the same game can be purchased for as little as $10.00. The Amerks will also be selling $5.00 tickets for the next home game following the date of the appearance.
During the past four seasons, Amerk players and their mascot, The Moose, have made over 100 appearances and accounted for over 17,000 books being read by kids from kindergarten and all the way through high school.
The second half of "Reading Power Play" enters kids into a grand prize drawing. Using a hat trick as a thematic vehicle, youth participants fill out a form for every three books they read, which then qualifies them for an entry into the grand prize drawing. The two winners will receive grand prize packages that include dinner, suite tickets and the opportunity to make the ceremonial puck drop at the Amerks' Saturday, February 13th home game against the Lake Erie Monsters.
The "Reading Power Play" runs from Wednesday, October 7th to Wednesday, January 13th. A complete reading program schedule will be available at the Amerks Guest Services Booth in the upper atrium lobby on game nights and online at amerks.com. For player or Moose appearances, please contact Warren Kosel at (585) 454-5335, ext. 3025.
